Why do people always bring up The Search Bar when ever a new thread comes up? Yes, I do know that one of the rules of The Escapist is no repeat threads, and I do know what would happen if someone re-posted "Dicks with Time Machines" ever week. But seriously, sometimes legitimate topics are posed and have a connection with a pervious thread that can only be described as "vague" and "coincidental" at best. Yet people slam them going straight for "SEARCH BAR!!!" like the people who "first" things and offer nothing else to the discussion.

Although this thread is semi-pointless.

Most people shout out "search bar" at things that have almost EXACT matches to a previously discussed topic. It's also a reminder for a lot of newbies to check atleast the first 3 pages before posting a thread that will lead to a repeated discussion.

The part that really irks me is that people are so afraid to post a topic that oftentimes you'll see someone add in at the bottom of their post "Yes, I checked the searchbar." It does seem like things might've gone a little bit overboard by the time that people who are making legitimate posts have to break concentration on the topic just to inform us that the searchbar was used.

I find people who say "use the search bar" annoying. If a repeat thread, unintentional or otherwise bothers them, they can just move on with their lives, no?

The search bar sucks I'll admit that, but if there was a topic made within the last month of the thread you want to make then chances are people are sick of it. I can see why the search bar peeps have been getting vicious with it lately seeing as there was a week where there were 6 threads all on the exact same topic, but still sometimes they do tend to overdue it.

I think under the right circumstances, it's not bad.
If someone post a thread when there's 3 other that are new and almost exactly the same, then I think someone should have the search bar pointed out to them.

But if someone's being a jerk and pointing out a thread from like a year ago, then yeah, that's just stupid.

Assuming that you're posting those threads as examples of this having been talked about before, I feel inclined to point out that the first two haven't been posted in for well over a month, and the other two are related to the subject, but don't really focus on it.

Pretty much everyone can agree if you can see multiple threads about the exact same subject on the same page can be very annoying, but sometimes people have something new to say about a particular subject, or the subject can be related to a previous subject. If you stick around any forum long enough you will see the same threads pop up as time goes by, it's just how things happen.

I believe that oftentimes the "search police" are overzealous, especially since the type of people that tend to be search police are usually longtime members. Sometimes it is well deserved, especially if people are blatantly ignoring other threads about the same subjects, but sometimes it is just as another form of trolling.

I see a halo topic every other day. I see a "your favorite weapon" topic every other day. I see so many repeat topics so often it is starting to get under my skin a little. I can see why people can get mad and then pull the search bar.

I didn't post them as examples, just that you should accept that people will hound you for it. It doesn't matter if you complain about it because people enjoy bringing it up. It's like people who participate in debate topics just to get under the skin of the other posters. Or people like the first posters of ZP, or the lolcats or motivation poster fanatics.

They exist and you can not stop them.

Ignore the search bar nazis. They have nothing better to do with their lives than wait for a repeat thread to pop up then go "OMFG!!! BURRRRRRN!! SEARCHBAR YOU SPASTIC!!!" or perhaps something a little more structured.
