My brother recently posted this on facebook.
I need a good PS2 game to play, preferably something in the mould of GTA or Canis Canem Edit, but not necessarily. Something with character development where you start shit and get to unlock cool stuff over the course of the game would be great. Reccommendations please!

I thought he'd be more likely to get the answers hes after here.
I've already suggested Saint's Row. And he's excluding final fantasy titles because he's already played them all except 12, which he refuses to due to the new combat system.

Any ideas?

Saints Row was for 360, so no luck there.

Ratchet and Clank games are a good place to start

Unfortunately the gta games are the best of that kind for that generation.
Also check out
Hulk Ultimate Destruction
Destroy All Humans (2)
Spiderman 2
Godfather.

You might also want to check out the Baldur's Gate (RPG) games for exploration and unlockables.

Really though if you want the best sandbox type game on the ps2, it's going to be (depending on your preferences) GTA Vice City or GTA San Andreas.

You could try Mercenaries. Sandbox game that's basically designed around blowing shit up with air-strikes.

Deus Ex, Dark Chronicle (dark cloud 2), Breath of fire:dragon quarters, Legia 2: duel saga.

yeah most of these are jrpg's but that was what the ps2 was best at
