Sears Tower name change to Willis Tower

I live in Chicago and pass the Sears Tower everyday to go to work. Its been called the Sears Tower since it was made in the 70's. But now a London-based insurance broker Willis Group Holdings has purchased the building and is changing its name to the Willis Tower in June. I think the name change is not needed. What do you guys think?

It's their building isn't it? They could call it big stiffy of the ground in the city. It's exactly like having a dog and not being able to rename it the way you want after a while.

It is weird, but it would be dumb for them to keep the name when they own the building. It would just create confusion. Also, Willis wants to promote their own company and doing this is pretty good advertising.

The Sears Tower is a landmark. After awhile, you cannot change names and have them stick. Most people in STL call the Scottrade Center the Kiel, or the Edward Jones Dome the TWA Dome.

To be honest, I see the reasoning behind the decision but I think a lot of people are going to keep on calling it the Sears Tower whatever the new holding company calls it.

I live in Chicago, and honestly I think that this doesn't make much difference. That said, I actually live in the suburbs. I don't go downtown very often. My dad thinks that this is a sad state for America that a foreign company gets to name the tower. I think thats its just a building, and that its name should be irrelevant, and that the fact that the company isn't an american company doesn't matter either. This degraded into an irrelevant argument, which is normal for us. I can't wait until I can get my own house and move to another country.

yeah, when i first heard this, I expected bruce willis.

I'm sure 8 out of 10 people will think of this when they hear 'Willis Tower'.

I completely agree! I'm also originally from Chicago, and the Sears Tower is a huge landmark for the city! Everyone knows it. Saying you are going to visit the Willis tower will never be the same. . .
It also annoys me that the name changes now, the building hasn't been owned by Sears in years and no one has changed the name, why now??
