Second Chances

So I never liked Resident Evil 4. I rented it when it first came out on the GameCube and I absolutely hated it. However, since I'm out of new games to play I decided to revisit this one and bought it for the Wii on the cheap. And you know what? I'm blown away by the game now. I finally see what so many people claimed was so great about this game.

So my question to all of you is, have you ever given a game a second chance and really liked it? Name the game, and (if you can) what changed your mind about it.

This may surprise all of you (alright, it probably won't) but I *gasp* hated Manhunt the first time I played it.

I had played it in the wrong atmosphere entirely.

Not saying I "love" it now, I think it's a really solid game, but playing it in the dark, at midnight really helped get me in the mood. Suffice to say, I had a much better time.

Bioshock. First time I rented this game I was scarred as hell, mostly because I accidentally set the lighting far too low. Oh, and there was the fact that the dead bodies kept twitching inhumanely.

Sigh... After a while I went back and tried it. I got through the first level and found that I was having a blast. It was terrific. Now it's one of my favorite games.

The only game I ge a second chance was Resi 4, and I still didn't like it.

Star Craft.

First time I played it I was spoiled by other RTS's, and when I went to Star Craft I was disappointment in the first 5 minutes of it, I pirated it the first time so it didn't bug me.

Then I saw it on sale in Futureshop... and I picked it up, and loved it thoroughly after wards (and for 5 bucks!)

Whats not to like about Resi 4? The gameplay is phenomenal. As far as single player shooter's go it's one of my favourites.

I don't have any games like that though. Generally when I hate a game I know full well why.

Shadow of the Colossus.
First time I played it, I was at a sort of new generation arcade (you pay for time, and you can play any game from a huge library). Because of this, I didn't spend much time with it, and went into it expecting a different sort of game. Plus, the first colossus is pretty much a test of the required puzzle solving nature you need to beat the game. I didn't have it at the time.
I picked it later on when it was in a bargain bin if only to reclaim my honor by beating the first boss. It is now my favorite game

OT: I can't really think of a game I've given a second chance yet. However, I've been debating whether or not I should give Super Mario Galaxy a second chance. I originally bought it a couple years ago, I played through the first couple levels...and then I just stopped. I don't know what it is, I just wasn't compelled. I'm willing to give it a second chance, but do you all think it's worth it?

I hated Borderlands until I played it with a friend; it really does improve loads.

Also, this is kind of off-topic, but I was originally hesitant about trying out InFamous (I got it for my birthday, as well as Assassin's Creed II, and beat the latter game before even touching the former). But when I finally started playing it, I absolutely loved it! Now it's one of my favorite games ever.

I went into it expecting a game heavier on the horror elements. The controls didn't really click with me, and I was relatively young when I played it so I got lost running around the dark villages and mountain paths easily. Now that I knew what to expect, and I'm a little less stupid, I see why it's so great.

Mass Effect 1. When I got it, I was so hyped up I couldn't see it's beauty(that spelled right?) and thought it was shit. A month later I went back and loved it.

Mass Effect 2, on the other hand, was godly. I played it WITH my high expectations and found it awesome! Few games have been able to do that for me.

This..was slightly the same for me. I didn't play Bioshock the first time around because it scared the hell out of me so I traded the game for something else. (Can't remember.)

As I got older I finally gave Bioshock 2 a shot - it really didn't make me cringe as much as the first one did so I played through it without a doubt. I was able to see just how awesome of a game it was so naturally I HAD to re-buy Bioshock and overcome what stopped me the first time around. [I'm proud to say I've finished both games now and extremely pleased with how it ended - I'm a sucker for those happy endings.] <3 Bioshock. <3

Final Fantasy X. Didn't really know what I was going into at the time I got this game. Never really tried a JRPG before, so turnbased combat really surprised me.

Tried it again and loved the combat system. Though I wish the game was with japanese dubs.

 

[Corn Cutter]

Never reinstalled a game after deleting it when I didn't like it. So in that case I haven't given them any 2nd chance.

But there are several games sleeping on my HD that I just didn't continue cause I was bored of them or whatever. Maybe I'll give them a second chance some day.

But mostly replaying games is disappointing even if I really liked them the first time. Guess it's because I'm getting accustomed to the better graphics and features of the new games step by step. So in that case I prefer keeping the old good memories instead of destroying them with a second run.
I still remember when I was emulating Doom again after 15 years. I spent ages trying to find the jump key until I figured out that you couldn't jump at all
