Second Crash

So I've been watching the circus that is the video game industry, and I just get cold shivers of deja vu stemming from the original video game market crash of the 80's.

You've got:

Regurgitated game content

Games that rely on a license (even its own) to carry it, while the game itself is crap

Corporations buying up all the development companies and churning out games as quickly as
possible, devoid of any life, originality, or creativity.

Poor economic climate

About the only thing that isn't similar is that unlike the 80's crash is that not everyone and their mom has a game system out.

Now I'm not saying that the market's going to die or anything. I just think it's going to stagnate in a few years, if things keep going the way they are. You can already see it in Japan. It's only a matter of time as American corporations end up the same, especially with them more interested in profit then their fanbase, and their practices of taking independent developers, buying them up, draining all creative juices out of them, and then casting aside the dried up husk.

Maybe it's a cyclical thing. Market gets big, big corps destroy everything, small companies rise from the ashes, surviving on small casual games, some small companies start making awesome games, small companies become big, cycle restarts.

Um...I had a point somewhere. Don't post first thing in the morning without sufficient caffeine, kids.

Another thing to add is DLC. A lot of it is good. But you get a lot of shitty stuff or unneccessary stuff.
Like the DLC for Resident Evil 5, everyone knows and agrees that THAT should have already been included, instead of having to pay and download D:<

Yeah.. I had a point somewhere too.. its 12:11am... zzzzzzzz

It is true in a way, but I don't think it's going to be nearly as bad as the 80s where the whole industry almost went belly-up. At least the games these days are reasonably playable and a lot of them even look good. In the early 80s, the games were so shitty that nobody even wanted to play them. At least the market still does exist, for the younger demographics at least. It's just that it isn't as profitable to produce games that may appeal to those that have more refined tastes and have been gaming for 20+ years.

It may very well be true, I kinda see something like that happening in the next couple of years. And I'm looking forward to it. I want to see the industry as it is now crumble and reinvent themself. Or am I being ignorant now?

You are being optomistic and short-sighted.

It will not be a magnificant fall from grace, it will be employees slowly downsized. Job loss is never fun.
Sure, it sucks for those being downsized. I agree. But it might bring something to the gaming table, to the bigger picture. All I'm saying is that I hope it won't be all bad. Some good may come from it, looking at the bigger picture.

The sad thing is that game companies have probably already realized this, but they are too busy turning out new DLC and B-rated games that they just don't have time to care about what they are doing.

Since the 80s the two things that have been able to keep the games of today interesting are story-based gameplay and advanced hardware rendering (woo 3D graphics) and we have been thoroughly milking those for the past 10 years or so. The question becomes: what's the next big innovation to gameplay? It sure as hell isn't motion control.

believe it or not the thing that saved the game industry in the 80's was nintendo introducing quality control but i doubt nintendo will come to the rescue again

Would be kinda nice, I know people might loose their jobs but theres always other jobs.. the gap when small companies start to get bigger but are not really big yet, slightly before they get really big is probably the best time xD
