Can someone please explain to me the appeal of Second Life? The idea behind it just seems weird to me.

I think that if your First Life is completely awesome, there is probably very little appeal. But games like Second Life give people a Second Chance at "being" someone different, and possibly having a more successful "life" in this alternative world.

To be honest, I don't know a lot about Second Life, but I think that in this sense it is much like World of Warcraft, except maybe for a slightly different demographic. Basically, if you are stuck in a boring desk job by day, it can be nice to be a "Destroyer of Worlds" (or maybe successful house owner in SL? I really don't know) by night.

To create a new 'life' for themselves to escape reality. They could alternatively play games because they help to escape reality and come with mind-blowing stories, but I suppose that doesn't occur to them.

I think it's one of those "do whatever you want" sandbox things. Only that "doing whatever you want" costs money so... i guess, it's a pretty silly game.

There isn't a lot to get it's a social community with 3D environments, much like a forum or chat session but with an added dress up feature.

It's amazing how quickly gamers of all people can judge others for enjoying a fantasy world. Especially since we can't go five minutes without complaining about games not giving you 'true' freedom of choice, something which is the main point of Second Life. I've never tried it myself, but I can certainly see the appeal of a truely free sandbox MMORPG with lots of weird sex. Just look it up on tvtropes if you want.

this goes also for second life. if you find that your life is a endless piece of ..failure you can just create yourself like you would like to be and 'ease the pain of life' (lie to yourself/justify your slothfulness), i guess.
I mean, what the fuck man? Second Life is equivalent to a rolling euthenasia? Whatever you say then...

It gives some people the opportunity to fail at life again. You know, much like people who only have a social life on the internet.
