When my gamer status is confronted by people i recently met i usually go for:

"The last 10 years I spent more time playing video games than I spent sleeping."

Ofc while this usually leaves people with no doubt of my gamer status, they also usually don't know how to move the conversation forward, unless they are themselves gamers in which case we invariably start discussing video games.

The term "gamer" is too broad. It's like saying "I'm a music-listener" instead of "I'm a techno freak". Need some definitions within that term.
As for me, I don't tell people I play games. Not because I'm embarrassed, but because it doesn't come up. I'm quite unsociable, so when people ask what I did on the weekend, it's always like "stayed at home" or "not much". If I skip a day off school due to games [footnote]Dragon Age and Minecraft.[/footnote] and people, the next day, ask what was wrong, I just say "stuff came up".
People usually find out I play games, but because games aren't a huge part of my life (yet), it's not something really worth discussing in depth with the people I "socialise"[footnote]By socialise, I mean listen and only talk when asked a question.[/footnote] with at school. On my Xbox, I only play CoD because I recently sold everything else to pre-order Halo Anniversary. On my PC, that's where the game money will be going. All I need is a processor, then I can start gaming for real!

I'd ask them if they'd played System Shock 2.

If they said 'no, but I love Bioshit' then the convo would end for the inquisitor was no gamer.

I would probably sigh heavily aswell.

I would say that I play Minecraft and Half-life. Minecraf to show that I am actually a gamer, since it's mostly unknown outside of gamer circles, and Half-Life to show that I'm play something other than CoD.

Don't say "Im a gamer". Say "I'm a General Grade 4 in Halo:Reach." If they don't know what you're talking about, instantly drop the subject.

To be honest, being a gamer in these times, doesn't degrade your social esteem as much as it did several years back.
Lots of people nowadays are gamers, even those who claim to be very "casual"
Can you name somebody who hasn't played Angry Birds or Farmville ?

so...actually...I dont think theres anything wrong with the title gamer.
There are more gamers among us that those gamers would admit ;P

I don't have this problem because I try not to associate with people that define themselves by arbitrary labels based on their hobbies.

I play games. You play games. Lots of people play games. None of us are gamers.

I don't really come out and say I'm a gamer, I usually just start chatting to people about games. A man came into work clutching Arkham Asylum and I told him it was my favourite game. We had a little chat about it, he mentioned Bioshock and Fifa at one point then he went on his merry little way.
[sub]It was odd, he was a smart business man too. But I imagine he didn't expect someone working at a bakery to be into games...[/sub]

I never come out with "I'm a gamer" if people just ask what I do/like to do I just say, "I play games" and leave it at that. I don't actually care what folk think, if they ask more and we get in to a discussion then cool, but I don't actually give a shit.

I feel like I've helped someone today.

OT: Seriously though, being a gamer means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. As far as I'm concerned, being a gamer is investing a decent proportion of your time and energy into videogaming. If people don't agree with that or assume something completely different of me because of mixed meanings, then it's not really my problem.

"I'm a gamer. But not like those console kiddies, I'm a PC gamer, we are much older, more mature, we have better games and a better community."

Yup, I stick in my PC elitism right from the start.

Just say the konami code.

I never even played any games that would require it, and I know it.

I don't often say I'm a gamer, but if people specifically asked I would say so, since I'm proud of my hobby, and I really don't have very many...

Don't you hate it when your playing a German minor and the BBB decides that it is going to expand to the east. I mean how the f^ck am I supposed to for the Germen Empire as Baden if France owns half of Prussia and has most of the other minors in their SoI.
Is that the "War in the East" game? Strategy I presume? Sounds cool, please tell me moar!
It is Victoria 2 You start in 1836 and choose any nation in the world. You manage the politics, industry, diplomacy, trade, government budget, technological advancement, and military of your country while making sure that your people stay happy. There is an old demo around somewhere but there has been a lot of improvements since it was released. Check out Gamersgate if your interested in buying it they put in on sale every once in a while, I got the complete Victoria 1&2 pack for $8 a while back.

My reply:

For example, they would ask "Are you a gamer?"
And I would reply with "I've slain the 16 collosi. I've submitted a speedrun from sonic 3 for a contest. I spend every spare moment playing some kind of game. Yes, I'm a gamer."
And they would instantly know.

That being said, I don't look down on those who only play apps or CoD....Unless they turn out to be a douche. Then I can look down on them for THAT. :p

well its a little known fact that i practise escapism, including but not limited to escaping reality through video, games, books, TV e.c.t, so yeah, you could call me a gamer, but its just one avenue of my interests you would presume to lable

It was easier before gaming became so widespread and popular, now its a widespread hobby whereas before the wii it was almost a stygma to some extent, now its accpeted for the most part.
Ive considered myself a gamer for years however, if i need to prove it i can even rattle off games going back to the 90s ive played and still own.
Unless a crime or problem can be possibly linked to games in any way shape or form...

I may give it a look, I always am on the lookout for new and interesting strategy games. Sounds like quite a bit of fun. Is it a high graphical type of game?
Here is a screen shot, it is not a really high graphic game but it is good enough.(It is peace time, but not for long.)

Usually when I say I graduated Game Dev at UNI they get that I am a Gamer, but they also tend to look funny at me afterwards :(

I could recommend:
Victoria 2 - Setting is the Industrial Age
Hearts of Iron II & III - WWII
Europa Universalis III - Late Renesaince and the Colonial period
Crusader King II is coming soon, that one is set in the middle ages

Those are all by one studio Paradox which is sort of the leader when it comes to Grand Strategy Games.
But there are other great titles that deserve a try:
Storm Frontline Nation - Great battle system and good graphics. Setting is the near future.
Reign Conflict of Nations - Kind of a steep learning curve but unique in Nation management options. Set in the early Middle age of North Eastern Europe.
Crusader Kings - Slightly outdated but still charming hand drawn graphics, set in the Middle Ages of Europe and the surrounding regions.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms - Is a fantastic blend between RPG and Strategy. Especially VII and XI. It's set in 2nd and 3rd Century China after the Fall of the Han Dynasty.
