Has anyone heard of any kind of book or study done not on the game industry but the gamers themselves? I'm particularly interested in an anthropological study of MMORPGers, but any genre would be cool too.

There is a pretty good documentary on MMO players by the name of Second Skin that may be just what you're looking for. The people it chronicles are, quite frankly, not the most well adjusted gamers. The documentary, however, does a good job of not demonizing the games but instead looking at the minds of the players who allow themself to be drawn into them to the degree that it can negatively impact their lives.

Edit: You can actually watch it online at http://documentarystorm.com/second-skin/

I haven't watched it yet myself but 100 yen is about the arcade gaming culture. There's also The King of Kong which shows a little insight into the pacman era competative side in the US, there is a bit of showcasing for the camera but still a good watch none the less. There is another docu featuring the Donkey Kong challenger from King of Kong on his lonesome which is more realistic and goes into depth of him practicing and preparing for the world record attempt, ATM I can't remember the docus name but it is one floating about on the net and made around the time as King of Kong.
