Sega and Avalanche Unveil Renegade Ops

Just Cause [http://www.amazon.com/Just-Cause-2-Xbox-360/dp/B0013RATNM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301584795&sr=8-1] developer Avalanche Studios and Sega are teaming up for Renegade Ops, a new co-op military shooter slated for digital release later this year.

You might think that the world needs a new military shooter about as much as it needs a hole in the head, but Renegade Ops sounds like it might actually bring something different to the party. When Inferno, a madman bent on global domination, bullies the world's nations into submission with the devastating power of his terrorist army and secret weapon, General Bryant assembles the Renegade Ops, an elite team of military specialists from around the world, and takes up the fight!

Renegade Ops will be playable in single-player mode, two-player split-screen mode or online in four-player co-op battles, and the name of the game is wanton destruction for freedom and democracy. "The IP is all about driving or flying around blowing stuff up while playing with your friends and that to us, is a dream-project," said Senior Producer Andreas Thorsén.

It may not be the most original idea ever but a more light-hearted take on the serious business of modern combat might be kind of fun. A bit like a cross between Call of Duty: Black Ops [http://www.amazon.com/Command-Conquer-Renegade-Pc/dp/B00005N7YM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301584898&sr=8-1], maybe? Not sure why I'm making that connection, but it just feels right somehow. Renegade Ops is scheduled to come out later this year on Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network and various fine PC digital distributors.

Please re-hire BOWL-OH SAN-TOE-SEE's voice actress for this game.

For added hilarity.

And what is the terrorist army called? Cobra?

This sounds a lot like a GI-JO plot to me lol
That is EXACTLY what I thought. The next thing. How the HELL has there not been a GI Joe game yet? (That shitty movie cash-in does not count, obviously) With a good quarter of the games today being old IPs drudged up and re-polished, you'd think someone would've thought of it by now. But anyway, this seems awesome.

I just hope it stays goofy and tongue in cheek.

So, Just Cause 2 with co-op?

NICE!!!
That's what I'm thinking! That would be freaking awesome! I loved Just Cause 2, and the whole time I was flying around, parachuting, blowing things up, and riding on top of cars, I was thinking: Man, this would be awesome with Co-Op.
So sign me up!

well judging from how it sounds it won't be "open world"

but we can always hope!

i've always wished for open-world downloadable games from XBLA and XBLIG, but there have never been any... maybe now my dreams shall be fulfilled!

Geez, this is going to make me sound like such a misanthrope, but...

No, no, no! I detest co-op. I hate relying on people and i'd much rather do things by myself, even if such things are screwing around. I want to screw around on my own terms and i want to fight enemies and complete challenges on my own terms. Co-op is the reason i barely pick up Resident Evil 5, and co-op is the reason i won't be picking up Portal 2 at all. Goddamnit.

...Still, for those of you who enjoy playing with mates regularly, i'm sure it'll be a blast. I can recognise when something just isn't for me.

Edit: My apologies, i didn't notice it was an XBLA and PSN title, i thought it was a full-blown release. If it's a 'bitesize game' as i call them, then i can understand why it may be based entirely around co-op. It's certainly not as a ball-busting as making a AAA focused around it (still looking at you, Resident Evil 5) and i tend not to pick up XBLA or PSN titles anyway, unless it's inherently awesome (Let's show Deathspank some love, people) or makes me feel nostalgic. (I know, i know... Crazy Taxi just isn't the same without The Offspring and Bad Religion)

well, there's GI-Joe Cobra Strike on the Atari 2600, GI-Joe Real American Hero on the Apple 2 and Commodore 64, Action Force and Action Force 2 on the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and Sinclair Spectrum, GI-Joe for the NES, GI-Joe Atlantis Factor for the NES and GI-Joe Arcade

so yeah

don't worry, just playing the smartass XD

I love how they put Ops in the title purely to get sales from people thinking it must be like Black Ops.

Yeah, the GI Joe connection is pretty obvious. I'm hoping it'll be kind of like the Mass Effect-Star Wars relationship: all of the awesome with 90 percent less suck.

Well, every only-Co-op mutiplayer game I've played I've enjoyed a lot. Though, to be precise, I've only played 2 such games, and both of them were from the L4D series. So, yeah. I like shooting zombies with friends.
Still, this looks fun. JC2 was pure random fun, so maybe they'll figure out something really entertaining. Fingers crossed!

I like the dev, and I like the premise. But I'm still sick of shooters.
