From Variety

Stories International has rights to several Sega properties:

"Of the vast library of titles that Stories has the rights to adapt, it?s moving forward with ?Altered Beast,? ?Streets of Rage,? ?Shinobi,? ?Rise of Nightmares? and ?Crazy Taxi? first as English-language live action and animated spinoffs. ?Virtua Fighter? and ?Golden Axe? also are part of the portfolio of properties."

Though indeed a childhood dream come true, how in God's name do you adapt Streets Of Rage in a modern setting? It's walking down a street and punching people - how would no one have guns (besides Mr. X of course)?

Side note - between the recent rumor for a Mario movie and Angry Birds, Minecraft, Warcraft, Assassin's Creed, and others already in the works, are we finally kicking off the true age of gaming movies?

My first reaction was that these are all incredibly bizzare properties to adapt to films as they're nearly entirely and wholly devoid of any story. However, after thinking about it a bit that might be kind of good.

They can insert some characters and nods to the game while writing an actual screenplay instead of a "videogame story" for lack of a better term. It might just work.

Does Sega actually own any properties worth adapting into movies?

What franchises do they still own besides Sonic, and would anyone actually care about a Sonic movie?

All of the games on that list look like they would make the kinds of movies that go direct to DVD. Golden Ax? I'm willing to bet money that it'll basically be "In the Name of the King" all over again.

There's still people holding a candle for Sonic SatAm. If no one else, they'd be pleased to see a movie pick up where it left off.

Other franchises?
They could give Panzer Dragoon a try. There's the Phantasy Star games and the Shining series. The Fist of the North Star. Apparently, there's something called Sakura Wars that was popular in Japan.

So you want a movie adaptation of a game adaptation of a manga?

By the way, a live action Fist of the North Star movie exists and is awful.

"Worth adapting into movies", in regards to videogames, is a bit of a loose term, given previous examples.

Sega have been twitching for far too long. Someone needs to grab a hammer and finish them off.

I swear, we're kinder to animals!

I don't know. 9/10 of these will probably end up with video game characters entering the real world or real people entering video game world.

With Jimmy Fallon. It was just called Taxi.

I'd feel better about some of these if I knew the people potentially working on them had the imagination to pull it off, but many of them sound like they will at best suffer the problem with Prince of Persia - it deals only tangentially with the roots of the story or aesthetic and comes off as a generic genre movie with a recognizable name.

Where's my Football Manager film, Sega?! You could even make it like the Goal films, except instead of being about a player, do it about an up-and-coming manager!

[sub]I may not be entirely serious about this.[/sub]

I wouldn't mind a Yakuza movie in all honesty. Franchise is really good, but not many people seem to know of it. Then there's always Shenmue as well. Now a good franchise that I think would make a good animated movie would be NiGHTS, but that would mean that SEGA would have to acknowledge that Sonic Team has made another franchise besides Sonic the Hedgehog...

Ask and ye shall receive!

And with the knowledge of a Yakuza movie having already been made, I see no more Sega games I wish to see movies of.

...and once my finals are over I shall go an watch it along with the Animal Crossing movie again. :D
I still think NiGHTS could still be adapted to an animated film for kids, given with what the subject matter of the game is. Or maybe that's just my want for Wizeman to be on the silver screen. :D

Honestly though, I think the best way to handle movies of video games is to have the actual studio that's in charge make the script. That's what they're doing for the Ratchet and Clank movie that comes out in a few months, the script was entirely written by Insomniac Games. I really hope that movie doesn't suck, but then again in all of Insomniac's history when it comes to the Ratchet and Clank franchise I've only ever been disappointed in two titles (Full Frontal Assault and All 4 One).

Done well, I might go see one of those. Especially a Panzer Dragoon film. Would be nice to see something rooted firmly in fantasy realms that hadn't come from Tolkein.

Altered Beast and Shinobi could be freaking awesome but I'm curious about how Crazy Taxi would work...and I'm also disappointed that Phantasy Star, Panzer Dragoon, and Sonic aren't being considered. Unless of course Sega doesn't own two of those but that still leaves Sonic and possibly Alex Kidd (though I don't see Alex Kidd working in a movie either...unless he's a gamer whose movies is about him being sucked into a bunch of Sega games...)

I'd watch a Streets of Rage film. It sounds perfect for the typical 80s cheese-fest. Set in a dystopian future metropolis, 3 ex-cops fight their way through the city, now under mob rule, to take down the criminal mastermind known only as Mr X. Bonus points for having a betrayal in the final act.

Yeah, but since it didn't have The Offspring, Bad Religion, or Silverbullit in its soundtrack, I say it doesn't count...

OT: A Golden Axe movie, eh? Outside of Crazy Taxi and Virtual Fighter, it's the only one that interest me on a personal level...
Other than that...
