Sega Still Thinks About Shenmue

Gamers aren't the only ones who want the Shenmue series to continue - but poor sales make it hard for Sega to justify a revisit to the franchise.

Those cruel bastards at Sega must be having the time of their lives playing with the hearts of their long-time fans as of late: First the potentially Sonic-Cycle-breaking Project Needlemouse that may or may not be Sonic 4 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97903-Is-Needlemouse-Sonic-4], and now beloved cult classic Shenmue?

In the annual Japanese developer interview issue of Famitsu 360, Sega discussed the Shenmue franchise, dormant since 2002's Shenmue II [http://www.amazon.com/Shenmue-2-Xbox/dp/B00006IJIS/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1280174130&sr=1-2]. While the people who played the games generally enjoyed them for the most part, the problem was that there were simply too few of them - poor sales mean that the series' story has languished in limbo along with protagonist Ryo Hazuki for the better part of a decade.

This doesn't mean that Sega doesn't think about doing a Shenmue III, of course - the developers certainly do, and were quick to assure fans that they would love to revisit the franchise if the chance came up. Of course, those aforementioned poor sales are the main sticking point: Neither Shenmue nor Shenmue II sold well enough to warrant a new game.

It might still happen someday, but for the moment, this is just Sega toying with the hearts of Shenmue fans. Meanies.

C'mon, SEGA, make the game...
C'mon, SEGA, do the right thing...
C'mon, SEGA, make the game...
C'mon, SEGA, do the right thing...

If we all start chanting this there's no way they can ignore us!

C'mon, SEGA, make the game...
C'mon, SEGA, do the right thing...
C'mon, SEGA, make the game...
C'mon, SEGA, do the right thing...

Sure...What's next? Another Power Stone game?

Because if they announce a Shenmue game, that's the next logical step to reviving all series that died with the Dreamcast. That and Skies of Arcadia.

Theirs a way to find out, release Shenmue 2 on Xbox originals and see how it sells on the xbl marketplace like discount crack.

The title of this thread just made my heart stop beating for a second, realise it's all just a pipe dream and shed one manly tear. That's right, my heart did a man cry! I have been aching, aching for the final installment of Shenmue, especially after that beautiful last disk on the second, with all of that lush scenery while you follow whats-her-face. And I have a burning desire to rip out Lan Di's larynx,

But Sega are jerks. ;w;

Love the Apachai Hopachai avatar you've got there. Kenichi was a fun series.

On topic tough, I do hope Shenmue 3 will be made someday. I still want to see an ending to the series.
Oh, and someone mentioned they should revival Power Stone as well, I agree. I always thought it'd be the perfect Live Arcade game. Power Stone online with 4 players. One can always dream.

A thousand times, this.

Never before have I urged so badly for a sequel. Especially since the first two are considered to be a sacred cow.

Though, I can certainly see their perspective. Shenmue, and to a lesser extent, Shenmue II, were essentially niche titles. People just simply were not willing to put up with the incredibly slow moments to see the story to the end, and as such, it really didn't sell all too well.

Couple that with the fact that they were incredibly expensive to make (I believe the budget spent on Shenmue was just under that of GTA IV, though don't quote me on that,) so it's easy to see the hesitation.

I like that idea... I'd buy it again in a heartbeat! I think my girlfriend would like it too; it's a shame that it's no longer really available any more...

Sega just make the game, it would redeem your image after those horrible Sonic games (the 3d ones(excluding Adventure 1 & 2))

I still have my Shenmue 2 4 disk DC version. One of my friends bought it for me as soon as it came out, for no other reason that he knew I loved the first one. It wasn't even my birthday or anything. Needless to say, he instantly became my favourite friend. <3

Well, Power Stone [and Power Stone 2] came out on PSP, so I wouldn't exactly say that PS died w/ the DC.

And I bought that game.

Load times were terrible. So, I made the matches 5 rounds to get the most out of each loading time.

Still, that means a sequel is possible, right?

Awesome sauce... That's the version that I had too, though I couldn't sit through the 2 hour cut scene movie thing that it came with. But it was an interesting idea at least...

Someone has already said what I was about to say. Re-release the first two. Seriously. If they sell, than you know that fans and newcomers alike are interested in the series still. That should be enough incentive to make a 3rd one.

I would love to see them make another game...if they do is another matter.

At least they still think about it from time to time, so its certainly not a "Never"
