Because Segways were always too expensive and too silly to warrant a purchase.
Then again; so are cars, but those took off somehow...
Well cars served a very important purpose, getting from point A to B a whole lot faster than the normal methods, plus at that time machines like that were amazing wonders of creation, and Ford made them cheap, and, etc etc

Anyways, Segways really serve no necessary purpose
But they're only useful if you live outside of a city.
And before cars suburbs didn't exist, so if you lived outside of a city your options were rural and city. I guess farmers could use them, but otherwise...
If not for cars there would be no suburbs. We'd have an ideal utopian society.

I think you mainly hear nothing about them because they're such an inefficient method of traveling. And they look dumb.

And their whole balancing act could be done just as easily with a third wheel.

1. They were dangerous. Their inventor died when he ran off a hill.
although everything else you said is true, I just have to point out that the inventor is alive, but the guy who invested in it and formed the company died.

Basically stinginess beat out laziness.

Also, not many people can pull off the look. Adam Savage is one of the few.

creator drove off a cliff with one ... i think that sorta laid the groundwork for the remainder of its existence

The problem is the price.

I want a Segway. Who the fuck DOESN'T want a Segway? But not many people want to spend twelve thousand plus dollars (half the price of a car) on something that doesn't really have too many practical applications.

So only rich people and facilities like Disney World and airports/malls have them.

Incidentally, my fat ass, rich ass drama teacher has a Segway, and occasionally rides around the school on it. It remains a mystery to me why she doesn't see the irony in the image of this. Fat, lazy, rich ***** who's too lazy to walk.

Also, it wasn't the guy who invented the Segway who died riding off a cliff with it, it was the company owner. Which is still funny as hell, just slightly less ironic.

When I was in Austin Texas they had segway tours. I saw a whole heard of people on segways circling around the capital building. Fucking funny. Glad it never took off, and well no reason for it to. My legs work fine and I don't have to pay anything to use them.

didn't the owner of the segway company die while using one? I don't know if that would have anything to do with it I mean I think it's top speed is about 10mph.
He went off a cliff I believe.

Thats quite funny how do you die riding a segway?
Off a cliff is how you die riding a segway... no joke.

As everyone said they are mostly pointless and they are really only good for amusement purposes. Once the shine wears off you would probably give up. I personally have never seen one in use other than on Mythbusters.

I personally have never seen a segway in the flesh. Ever. So yeah.

And isn't there a law against using one on the pavement, but they're also not technically classed as 'vehicles' so they can't be used on roads, either? I'm sure I read that somewhere. -Shrug-

Segways didn't go away completly, we've just smoothly transitioned into more practical transportation methods.

...Segue joke.

At least those things are practical, being able to transport myself and plenty of stuff. I mean, how else would I go to a LAN-party? Plus it goes fast enough that I can cruise all around Europe in a relatively small timespan.

Which is everything a Segway can't do. Damn those things are pointless.

I'd like to clarify that the owner of the Segway company died, and not the creator.

The inventor (Dean Kamen) is still very much alive, in all his jean-suit wearing glory.

OT: I feel that the price scared many people off, as people have bought much less useful products in the past, albeit for much cheaper than what you had to give up for one of those.

People remembered they could walk.

Walking is more versatile, free, has a longer "battery" life, is safer, healthier, and only marginally slower.

Also, yeah, the owner of the company drove off a cliff in one... Dying from the product you're selling will generally put a dent on your product's reputation...

I love them, especially the later ones with better turn controls and max speeds that replicate human run speeds instead of walk, but they're expensive. Luckily, Mission Bay has rentals.

Oh yeah, I wonder if they ever found out if it was murder, an accident or mechanical failure...or if they still don't know?
