Valid points Trivun though i have to point out that i know quite a large portion of Emo's who say they have harmed themselves, and some who i have seen the actual scars. I dont know whether i happen to live somewhere which is out of the norm or not. Though i agree with the main point that it is not the emo culture itself but the stereotyping caused by others, at least i think thats the point you where making.

So again, why is it viewed an an only Emo thing?
Because people are fucking dipshits who are happy to think we live in a world full of stereotypes, cause that way nobody is required to THINK.

I had a self harm problem for quite a while, and I really don't think I tick many of the classic "emo" boxes. It was because of several very complex mental issues, not because "my favourite band taught me it was cool" or whatever.

Anyone who self harms has a mental problem, such as depression or low self esteem, and needs help. Calling them an emo doesn't help them. Getting something done with a professional mental health expert does.
For the love of god man, calling it a problem or a condition doesn't help either, that can only make them feel worse as they start beggining to think that they are wrong and shouldn't be living, depression is not a logical thought process it's just one deep and dark spiral that is nigh impossible to survive in alone.
Sorry, it's just one of those things that's really hard to phrase correctly and still get the point across. I didn't mean it as an actual problem, as such, but I can't really think of a way to describe what I meant. Hopefully people reading it will understand what I mean, I just can't find the right way to put it into words.

Yep, that's exactly the point I was trying to make. I'll admit now, some emos do self harm and the evidence for that is all over the place, especially on the internet. But there are so many more emos out there, it's not something that can be generalised by a single stereotype. It's similar to saying that because there are a few ex-Catholic priests who have been done by the police for child abuse and child porn, then all Catholics are paedophiles. Obviously this is a complete lie and there are many decent Catholics out there who are appalled at such stereotypes, but that doesn't stop them from being made. Likewise for emos and self harm.

Disclaimer: I did not mean for that example to be an insult or attack against anyone of any practising faith, least of all Catholics. I know Catholics who are close friends of mine, and I simply used that example because I felt it would be something recognisable to most readers.

People cut themselves (or hurt otherwise) because they have serious problems (or they're masochists)
Emo's cut themselves cause they think it makes them cool.

Easiest way to tell the difference is this.
If they brag about it, it's emo cutting. If they're trying to hide it/ashamed of it, it's not.

Emos don't do it because they think it looks cool, they just do it to draw attention to themselves, all being an emo really is is trying to balance being anti-social and an attention whore.

Not nessisarily.
We have to be wary of descending into stereotypes again here.

I have NEVER been ashamed of my scars, I don't hide them or make cheap and flimsy excuses if people ask me about them... but also I'm not going to wave my thighs in your face and say HEY WANNA SEE MY SELF HARM SCARS AREN'T I COOL AND EDGY??

The sad truth is that every people is different, whether they self harm or not. Just cause I refuse to wear long sleeves in the middle of june so your eyes aren't offended by my scar tissue does not mean I'm looking for attention.

I just sortof think the attention whoring and trying to look cool is the same thing. I bet some of them think it makes them sortof bad-ass in some pathetic way.

People who do it just cause they want some attention like that are sort of an insult to people with real problems.

The sad thing about that stereotype is that so many emos cut themselves only because the stereotype says they should.
But you're right when you say that you can't place them all under one stereotype, for example most people think of "scene" and "emo" as synonymous but they're actually very different.

Well personally i'm glad mine isn't that visible, i got them cause i was really angry and wanted to hurt someone, but the only one i could justify hurting was myself. I regret doing it, and I'm not too happy about people i know knowing about it. I'm really ashamed of doing it cause it made my parents freaking scared, which was in no way intentional, i just didn't think of that at the time.

Well I understand where you're coming from... I'll happily wear clothes that show my scars when I'm out in town or at work, but around my parents I will go to extraordinarily stupid lengths to cover them up, just cause I wouldn't want my folks to be disappointed or upset by my own stupid choices.
I just remember the first time I hurt myself, I was so shocked with myself that I ran and told my mom straight away what I had done, and just seeing how ANGRY and scared she got made me vow to never inflict my weird behaviour on her again.

But if strangers wanna come up to me and ***** about my scars I'll be happy to talk to them and explain why I have them, if only to try and open their minds a little and understand we don't all self harm just cause the cool kids do it. -.-

if anyone thinks self harming has anything to do with being emo is a retard
...Or has been told so, and decided it's true. Don't be so mean and ignorant. Don't be ignorant to the people who are ignorant enough to think that. I know, they deserve it, but don't be that way. It's not true. I once thought it, and yet, I am very intelligent (And also learns quickly. The opposite of that is what "retard" truly means.).

This doesn't contribute, exactly, but about half my "friends" are emo, and some of them cut themselves.

If it turns out you've stood in the same room as a My Chemical Romance CD at some point in your life, your fate is sealed my friend..

Exactly what stereotypical people think. I hope there's sarcasm in your post (And I put it there for you. I think.).

Noooo! I guess I now have to straighten my jew-fro, draw tears on my face with a Sharpie, act all pissy, hate everyone (more then I already do), argue with my parents for no good reason, ***** about how I've gone through so much pain even though I haven't seen shit and never go outside.
