So, some of you may know, I'm studying music. Its more focused on Popular music, as apposed to some place that is all about Classical or Jazz.

In one of my classes we were talking about selling out and someone then asked the question "Would you sell out" to my suprise, it was about 50/50. Half the people (including myself) said they would sell out, doing massive shows you might hate for massive amounts of money. The other half said they would not sell out, doing little gigs you like but still having a day job.

My questions for the good people of the Escapist is simple - Would you do somthing you don't like for money?

If someone said "I will give you a 3 million doller advance on a 5 album deal but the band is an electro dance pop punk band (a combo of Fallout boy and Metro station) and you have to dress how we tell you" I would say "Very yes!"

I know it sounds shallow, but after my 5 records are done I will be quite rich and have quite a name for myself. I can then retire to my home studio and do that avent-guard concept album I've always wanted to do.

Disclaimer: Your answers do not have to be music related. Also, my idea of 'selling out' may or may not match yours but lets leave that for another day.

=D

I would like to think I would do something I was gifted at for the love of it, not for money. But I would probably sell out and regret it my whole life.

I would have to say "Make it 6 mill, I get $3000 every week of touring $5 for each copy of each album sold for the first record, $10 for second, $15 for third, $20 for fourth and $25 for fifth" If they say no then I would take the 3 mill

I hear Metallica is a sell out, same with Eagles... we should make a list of sell outs for anything :D

Hmm.. I don't know how you would sell out in archaeology.. But music-wise, I don't think I would unless my music career is as bad as Flight of the Conchord's (in their television series, not in real life.)

Depends on the money. If I'm getting shitloads I'd sing Jonas Brothers crap with a smile, but if the pays average they can shove it.

That is a good point you make, and actually quite artistically inclined, I'd say, in a very utilitaristic sort of way. But the thing is that with "selling out," at least in the concept that you seem to be using it, implies constant work of a very, very specific variety, and make no mistake: work is work. Your schedule would be full, and by the end of said five years your musical skills would be at a very different place than when you begun, so you'd have to learn how to deal with that. Music, like many of the arts is a discipline that thrives not in talent alone but from constant practice and repetition. To suddenly finish and break away from your one time work would be incredibly hard and who knows what the end results would be. That's something you'd have to also consider when "selling out."

As for me, I don't think i would. How could I sell out in physics? I'd have to work for a major company or something, or become an economist, or developing theories with applications in weapons for good money, or whatever(and that if they even wanted me), and I just don't see myself going down that path because at some point it just stops being about the money, I think in a field such as this--at least from my perspective.

Absolutely not. I honestly never wanted to be rich. I'd be happy living in a small apartment, with just enough money to survive. If I can make just enough from writing books (how can you sell out with books? I guess you could write a bunch of shitty popular stuff...) anyway, if I could make just enough to get by, I'd be happy.
What he said.
Even down to the writing books part, oddly.

Oh my!

That gives me a lot to think about. In all honesty I havn't really thought about how I would change, both as an artist and a person, and I'm not quite sure how to relpy to that. I shall ponder this for awhile.

I love how you realise that music is as much about hard, hard work as it is about tallent. This is somthing that I am only just starting to get my head around.

Kudos!

Of course, every single one of us would sell out. We're all whores, some of us just have higher price tags.

For 3 million dollars? ...probably. If I could do what I want with the albums I don't care about the clothes or what else they put my name to, its the music that matters so yes, I'd sell out everything but my music.

I imagine selling out is like selling your soul. Music is a way of expression, and if you've got someone else telling you what to express, then I don't care how much you pay me, it's not real music (entertaining sound? That's how I class the Jonas Brothers, anyway).

But seeing as the question was "Would you do something you don't like for money?" it depends on how much money and whether it goes against my morals. I would eat a (dead) spider for a thousand bucks, but you couldn't make me dance in the spotlight for a million dollars. o.o

What about foreign aid workers? They're definitely not getting paid much, and it's really dangerous in some countries.

Well, it really depends on how far you're loosing your dignity. Selling out basically means now, you do something that isn't you for the $$$. If I was trying to aim for a high dream of creating my own scripts but could not due to not really having a name out, and some producer wanted me to write up a teen-girl drama about a shoppaholic that says the words 'lol' in real life, I think I would suck it in, just so I can take that next step.

However, I wouldn't loose my self-respect. If it were something like a porn agent asked me to write up the next amazing 'Apollo 69,' I would decline (but now that I think about it, it would be fun however to get a group of friends around and try and script that)... point is, I would only do it to the point where I wouldn't feel comfortable, or loose some dignity, but if it were to help me achieve a future goal, then yeah. Just another stepping stone.

I know it's a little cleshia, but money doesn't buy you happyiness. I'd rather just have enough to get by and be done with it. Theres nothing really expensive I really need. I'd rather just do something for the love it. Money is nice, but it doesn't do you much good in the long run.

If i could make $3million in 5 years, where do i sign ?
As after then i could retire and focus on the things i want to work on.
These things couldnt really be effected by selling out, as they are hobbies of mine.
What could i do that would be considered selling out ? that's the quandry. I have no real talent, except my conversational skills. I guess a con artist, but that isnt really selling out, it is a crime.

When I hear about people selling out, I think of selling your life to contracts and corporate execs who don't give a rats ass about you, being milked for all your worth, having zero privacy due to paperazzi, and degrading the quality of your work since your being milked to death. Plus, it may just be sub-consious selousy, but it annoys me when someone claims they love something, yet have the nerve to do what they do for unreasonable profits. I can understand having a small financial gain for something, but your love for the project should be most of the reward. Plenty of people starve, yet celebs live in oversized houses with space they don't need and drive ten different cars.

It depends on what's being asked of me and how much money is being offered, but that's true of just about anyone. There are certain things I will not due, no matter what I'm offered, but for most things, I can be bought.
