Metal Gear Solid 4....wait no, that is the exact opposite. I had no idea WTF was going on.

Lets see...Fight Night Round 3. There is no story!

I have a habit of skipping games that I don't really care about the entire story line. My list of game I played without playing the first are Fallout 3, Fable 2 Resident Evil 4 (I played 5) Samurai Warriors Two Call of Duty 3 and GTA 4- and that's just this gen (not including RE4).

So I want to know game you can or have played out of sequence. Now that I've played the first I'm thinking of buying Fable 1, so also state whether or not the games are still fun without playing the first.
Killzone 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Tom Clancy GRAW 2, Resident evil 5, Assassin's creed 2, FEAR 2 (in my opinion), Oblivion (but, seriously... why on Earth would you want to?)
That's just a few.

World or Warcraft, although it pisses some people off if you haven't at least played Warcraft 3, That is if you try talking about lore.

Uncharted 2. I have yet to play it, but I have heard that you can understand it without playing the first.

Also, I played Kingdom Hearts 2 before playing Kingdom Hearts 1. I still understood it, bt after playing KH1 and then playing KH2 again, it made alot more sense.

Resident Evil 4
Obscure: The Aftermath
Drakengard 2
Silent Hill 2
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Shadow Hearts: From The New World
Devil May Cry 2-4
Fatal Frame 2 or 3

However, I'm not one to really play games out of order (most of the time). So while you could play any of these games without playing the previous ones, I always suggest you play the first one(s) first anyways. x3 Makes the sequels better.

Half-life 2. I played Half-Life on PS2, and unless the PC version had a magic "add story" option on the main menu, you dint need to play the original to enjoy HL2.

Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. The game happens at pretty exactly the same time as the first one and the plots intertwine a little bit to link it to Rainbow 6 Vegas, but not to alienate new players.

The Splinter Cell series. The games make minor references to previous games, but you can use your imagination to fill in any blanks

I'm not saying can't I'm saying what game would you be confused or have less/not understand that you're missing plot and therefore not enjoy it.

Well you can't say exactly Creed two mostly I'm sure but it's now out so there's no guarantee.

Fable 2. There is pretty much nothing from the original that you need to know to figure out how the world works in the sequel.

This more or less sums it up. I think it would be harder to find a sequel that required a play-through the original game first. Most games nowadays use the sequel to update the game system and encourage more people to play it; updating the story comes more as an after thought.

That having been said, I doubt I would enjoy the upcoming Mass Effect 2 without finishing the first one. And as rhyno said earlier, the Kingdom Hearts series is more difficult to follow without having some idea what happened the first go around.

But then, that's what wikipedia is for...

First of all, as mentioned most early era video games with sequels are easily playable without any previous games like Mario Bros, Doom, Mega Man, Sonic and so forth. Since this is not quite what I believe the intended question to be, I'll take the biggest one that hasn't been mentioned.

System Shock 2.

After that, I like the WoW suggestion, that's something I hadn't thought of so I'll put it on my list, then I'd go with Half Life 2. While some of the characters will not be familiar, I felt it stood up quite well on its own.

Oh, and if you glance slightly to the left or right of your screen for probably a couple more days, you'll see another good answer: Grand Theft Auto.
