What I'm wondering is why do these games get much criticism for being too much like their predecessor but other gaming gorillas, such as Call of Duty and Gears of war, don't?
I haven't paid too much attention to the outlook of the community of GoW, but Call of Duty most certainly does take several large boatloads of flak for sequels being more of the same.
It's an accusation that, interestingly, sometimes propogates backwards in frachises as well. The
Halo series has been fairly consistant in style and gameplay ever since
Halo 2, yet these days people also point at the
Halo 1->
Halo 2 bridge for not changing a whole lot as well, which is little bit ridiculous (and, to this day, pretty much every complaint about
Halo 2 from long-time HCE fans that isn't whining about
Halo 2's ending ultimately boils down to "they changed everything waaaaay too radically").
A sequel being similar to its predecessor isn't in and of itself an issue; what needs to stay and what needs to change is a complicated balancing act sometimes.
