Well, I was looking at Mass Effect 2 trailers and just came to think about how most sequels these days dont do much for the graphics.

What are your opinions on this?

M'kay.

OT: I don't see the issue here, why do games need upgrade their graphics? Prototype looks like shit and it seems to be doing fairly well.

I think the graphic changes between and Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 were quite different. But its come to a apex where the console game engines are maxed out. And I am fine with that , as long as the games coming out are fun, and innovative.

Less sequels and more new IPs.

Personally, I'm happy with the level graphics are at right now. Any more realistic and it's gonna start getting close to the Uncanny Valley, in my opinion.

Uh, it lowers development costs and allows them to spend time on the things that actually matter. Mass Effect looked good enough. It doesn't need improving in that area.

I agree I blame complacency using the current engines that are kicking about.
*Cough-Source-Cough* Valve seem to love that engine.
LULZ - clearly you've understood the reason they made it in the first place...

OT: Err... Have you seen the difference between ME and ME2? I mean, side by side - it's a vast improvement.

Anyway, in spite of your terrible example you're right most games won't advance much further; 'tis what you get for being in a console dominating era.

Funny you say that because ME2 is a lot sharper and more detailed apparently; on the same engine.

But yeah who cares as long as the gameplay is good.

When games have improved graphics, there neglecting gameplay, and releasing a stale re-hash of an old game with no creativity, just better graphics. When they don't improve graphics, there lazy and complacent. Interesting...

Real answer is, most likely, that developing a new, better, prettier engine is costly, the current generation of consoles is going to be pretty long, and can only go so far, We are reaching a pretty vicious point where efforts to make a game look better meet with diminishing returns, and gamers have resoundingly stated that they would rather have better gameplay then better graphics. The bump from present generation to photo realism would probably be smaller then any other generation gap, so we arn't seeing massive jumps. That's a good thing.

Well I rather they spent less time on graphics as graphics are good enough for the most as they need to be I think more time needs to be spend on gameplay and story specificaly the length with games nowadays.
