Despite being another thread clearly made just to blow ME2's horn, I'm going to say Assassni's Creed 2.

I played AC2 and loved it, wanted the story of number 1 and am not finding it half as enjoyable. It's mostly the guards. Those paranoid nuts chop your head off just for walking past them.
I had the same problem, having not owned AC1, only having played a bit of it at a friend's. But after playing a little of AC2, I couldn't bring myself to play 1 just for the story. That's what wikipedia's for, right?

So yeah, sequels better than the originals:
Assassin's Creed 2
Mass Effect 2
Gears of War 2
Half life 2
Lego Star Wars 2... don't judge me!

And, despite the fact that it's a film rather than a game, The Empire Strikes Back rather than A New Hope. Also episode 3 is better than episode 2, but that's not hard...

EDIT: Also Pokemon Gold/Silver were better than Red/Blue. As I already said, don't judge me! (please)

Oblivion and Diablo II are such games for me. But there are a lot of others as well.

Wasn't this about sequels being TOO good compared to the original, opposed to merely an improvement?

Streetfighter 2. Excellent, genre defining sequel to a poor original.

This thing is pretty rare. Most of the originals mentioned here are classics already and worth playing.

Assassin's Creed 2 for sure. I played through the first and hated almost everything about it, except the story. And the story was enough to make me buy the second and see what was happening. I don't think the story was as strong in the second, but everything else was vastly improved. Hopefully they get everything right with the third.

KOTOR2 I can't remember specifically why because it's been a while now, but I just remember trying to replay the first one and thinking "I'd rather be playing 2".
I would agree with you, until you got into about the last couple hours of the game. While maybe not fulfilling (to me at least) at least KOTOR actually ended. That still annoys me :<

This is an excellent example. I ran out of steam long before I reached the end of AC1 yet I continue playing AC2. There are improvements on all fronts as far as I'm concerned.

That said, video games often express this trend. Thief II was better in every respect from Thief I, Mechwarrior 3 is better than 1 and 2, and so on.

I'm going to have to say Saint's Row 2. They just put so many new ideas into the game and in general it felt much more alive and vibrant then the first one did with a lot more gameplay mechanics and a sheer focus on just being fun.

Lack of visible bugs, like the overheat bug?
Really? I had a part in Mordin's clinic where my character floated up and out of the level and even saving and reloading wouldn't fix it, ended up having to do the mission again to get back to the clinic and avoid the glitchy part. Also noticed much worse jumps and disappearances of character models during conversations than in the first.

Also, are you sure the overheat bug was actually a bug in the first game? I'm assuming you mean when it occasionally stops cooling down... That's an enemy using the overload ability.

Thing is, I still miss a lot of things... The thermal clips can get fucked, I never needed them in the first game once I had my upgraded Spectre gear, so their codex explanation for it just annoyed me further. I'm probably one of the few people who actually liked the Mako, it was just the environments you drive around in I found boring. And WHY THE FUCK REGENERATIVE HEALTH?!

But oh well, despite my qualms, I completed the game last night after several multi hour sessions over the last week, although that pissed me off too because Mordin and Legion died, despite me hearing about how it would be obvious who would die and who wouldn't at the end... Kind of weird considering I had no idea that either character would end up dead.

Never happened to me. Disappearance of models? I think it happened once, but it was a very short sentence, I think with Tali.

Yeah, I've read so on the official forums too. But I don't remember every single boss having the Overload ability. It was particularly frustrating with Saren, since he is a long fight without quick-saves.

after playing oblivion, morrowind feels, plays and looks like crap
Actually, with me playing Morrowind first I have a hard time with Oblivion. Oblivion certainly has better combat but I don't think anything else can compare.

Really? You enjoyed NWN more than NWN 2? Without the expansions it's nigh on unplayable. Vanilla NWN is down there with Temple of Elemental Evil as one of the worst D&D games on the PC. NWN 2 was a HUGE step up by comparison.
Haha, really? I love opinions! I'm actually of the opinion that Elemental Evil is the best D&D game ever made. Well, other than Planescape but that game is pretty well on it's own plateau of awesome.

Yeah, so after almost two weeks, I got to play Mass Effect 2... played it almost 6 hours in a row yesterday, it was just too awesome.

But this got me thinking... why bother coming back to ME1? I mean, I could try to do other things, get different ending and save other teammates, but whenever I think about it... everything I found annoying in ME1, it's gone in ME2. Regeneration between fights? Yep. Better hacking/scanning? Yeah. More customization despite lack of equipment screen? Aye. A lot more enjoyable combat? More compelling characters and storyline? Lack of visible bugs, like the overheat bug?

...Seriously, ME2 ruined ME1 for me. Just like Neverwinter Nights ruined NwN 2 for me, and Heroes of Might and Magic III ruined HoMM I, II and IV.
If a sequel 'ruins' (I think it's stupid to use the word 'ruin' here, since it didn't actually make the first game any worse) the previous game, isn't that a good thing? I mean, it's really bad if part 1 is a good game and part 2 is worse. You'd have no reason to ever play part 2, and if you did you wouldn't enjoy it so much. If part 1 was great and part 2 was better, you can first fully enjoy part 1, and when part 2 is out you can fully enjoy that.

On-topic:
- Jagged Alliance 2
- Saints Row 2
- Baldur's Gate 2
...just to name a few

Sims 2 and Sims 1. There's a small number of people who would bite my head off for saying t but well, good for them. Two had such incredible complexity. Number 3 has a sufficiently large number of bugs that it's currently ruining the experience for me unfortunately so I don't really feel qualified to comment.

I'd have to say Resistance 2, that game didn't get the respect it deserved. Improved on every aspect from the first one, what more could you want. The online co-op was soo good

Gameplay-wise, I have to agree that ToEE is the best D&D game ever made. Story-wise... not so much.

I do prefer NWN2 over NWN1 in every single way except the multiplayer aspect, but as you said, lol opinions.

Ack, gameplay wise ToEE was HORRID. Pathing was the worst I have EVER seen it. Attacks of opportunity were so broken. One of the best strategies in that game was to stay where you were and let the enemy come to you, because going to them was just a recipe for disaster.

Now if you wanna know the best 3rd edition D&D game out there, look no further than Icewind dale 2. Great storyline, solid gameplay, the whole package! The first game was great also, but 2 took it to a whole new level. It was challenging, but it wasn't the broken gameplay that made it challenging. I still remember one of the early levels with goblins on wargs that would use drums to summon reinforcements so you had to rush in and attack the drums, but there were traps so you had to be careful. The little recon missions with my stealthed thief to make sure that enemies were not gonna jump me beyond the fog. It's one of those games where each battle can be a chancey thing, so you save whenever you can. Despite the fact that it is on a weighted points based stat system, it remains up in the top 5 PC games of all time for me.

Speaking of which, no D&D list is complete without saying that Baldurs gate 2 is the best of all time. Just in case you are wondering NWN fans, I don't play multiplayer, so single player campeigns are what I base everything off of. Now the original BG was a good game, and well worth playing, but BG2 just blew your mind. Only Morrowind comes close to the number of hundreds of hours spent playing this game. There is just so much to do, and combinations of parties to try in certain areas. Dragons, mindflayers, drow, vampires, golems and a wide assortment of enemies block your path, and like Icewind dale 2, it was sometimes frustratingly challenging, but not broken in gameplay. The strange thing is, I only bothered to play thone of baal through once, even after all the time I spent playing shadows of amn. I just felt that the game really didn't need an expansion. It was neat to see it concluded, but I almost would rather just play the original over and over.
