Just watched this "Firefly" [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/].

Why Fox, why in god's name did you have to destroy this before it even got out of the starting gate!? I mean, you didn't even air the first episode first!

Seriously, such a great theme and story gone to waste because of nothing more than poor handling. Tragic.

Anyone else feel like crying with me? :(

yeah i dont know what they were thinking either. i didnt watch the series till like months or years after it aired so i watched them in order. but when i heard that fox aired them in the wrong order i was like thats stupidly crazy.

but maybe the thing that makes the series so great is that their are 12ish episodes and a movie.

what would the oppinion of the series be if they did 6 seasons and no movie, or was cancelled after the 2nd season cause they actually only had good ideas for one season? maybe it was for the best that fox canceleled it cause now we have an awesome season + movie that you can get through in an afternoon

Eh. Yes, Firefly was a great show unjustly killed before its time, but frankly, it's at the point now that I don't want it to be resurrected. Serenity did a fantastic job of giving closure to the story, and was one of the best science fiction films of recent years to boot, so on balance I think it could've been a lot worse. Besides, if Firefly had gone on longer, it might have lapsed in quality, and it wouldn't have the beloved cult following that it does now. It was very brief, yes, but each episode was brilliant, and it would have been unlikely for that quality to be consistent in successive seasons. I watched Serenity just the other day, in fact. It's a wonderful film.

Book: You can't order me around, boy; I'm not one of your crew.
Mal: Yes you are.

Wash: I'm a leaf on the wind, watch how I --

Kaylee: The hell with this, I'm gonna live.

River: You take care of me, Simon; you've always taken care of me. My turn.

But really? I mean they killed off one of the most mysterious characters after hinting at his long, complicated history for the past for 12 episodes. The only line that gave closure was him saying, "No I don't." It would have been worth at least 2 more seasons to find out exactly who and what he was in my opinion.

Then they turned the doctor into this ballsy superhero type at the opening scene and impaled the comic relief just go put the sister to some kind of use at the end. It seemed like they were trying too hard to cut all the loose ends instead of neatly tying them up. I suppose that's what happens though when they axe the series before it even gets started.

Who knows, it may have turned to crap after season one. On the other hand, look at Dexter. Five seasons, some good, some not as good but at least it has a chance to prove itself.

It's kind of our fault that nobody watched it until after it was canceled.

I don't really view Firefly as "TEH BEST SHO EVAR" like a lot of people do, but it was good. Although, personally, I liked Serenity more than the TV series, just because so much stuff was happening.

Hell, I didnt even know it existed until my friend showed me it last year... and also tried to get me to join his Firefly tabletop RPG "Crew".

And to be truthful, I would have liked to see it continue, just because the setting of a space opera with cowboys is just several shades of awesome.

Well we can beat up Fox about Firefly for forever, or we can beat them up for NOT canceling The Simpsons.

Haven't you ever read FOX's marketing plan? It goes something like "Create a show, let it run for a season or two then cancel it. If Adult Swim makes the reruns popular then bring it back and milk it like the humans in Daybreakers."

it should never have been killed, we're also talking about fox, a network that canceled Futurama and family guy, but won't let the bloated yellow monstrosity that is the simpsons die the death that should happen to old shows once they hit season 15

fox for some stupid reason hired a baboon to schedule their programming, the majority of shows that die on fox die because someone fucked with the line up for the bazillionth time or because their target audience hates to think and would rather watch football, i mean really, i once went through a month long period where all my favorite shows were replaced by sporting events with no change or update to the normal schedule, it's fine to air a sporting event, notsmuch when it airs without warning.

And this is what they did, this is why Firefly died replaced by such wonderful and unforgettable shows like Joe Millionaire

I watched Firefly for the first time last year, and loved every minute of it. Then craving more, I immediately watched Serenity. I was then very sad for the next day or two, for two reasons:

1) I realized that that was all there was and ever would be of Firefly. I was depressed to see such a fun and brilliant show with a lot of potential cut down before it could truly shine.

2) I didn't really enjoy Serenity. While it had the same feel of the TV show for the most part, it just didn't feel the same to me. It seemed like the movie was made in a universe where Firefly aired for 3+ seasons, and just didn't quite gel with the 12 episodes in my mind. Also, I hated...
...how they handled the character deaths. Mr. Universe was introduced in the movie and had a very minor role, so I didn't really care about his death and therefore it didn't contribute much to the movie.

Book's death was badly done because he was wounded in a (presumably badass) battle, but we didn't get to see it. Instead of seeing Book's blaze of glory, we just get to watch him die after the fact. And we still never got to know about his secrets.

Finally, and worst of all, was Wash's death. Why did he have to die? His death seemed so random, out-of-the-blue, and unnecessary save for adding more emotional weight to the climax. It would have been better if he had died saving the rest of the crew, but they were already safe! He landed the ship! Then WHAM, Wash is dead. I just didn't see much sense in it.
If Serenity was supposed to be Whedon's send off to Mal and the crew and a last hurrah for fans, it didn't really give a lot of closure, and instead of leaving me satisfied, I felt sad that that was it. I guess I had just expected more.

So yes, it made me sad. To the point where I almost wished I hadn't seen Serenity and had just stopped after Firefly.

This website has been pondering this for years and we still don't understand why it happened.

Am I the only one who thinks the fans of Firefly go a little overboard? Look, I think it was very promising, but eight years of nerd rage is enough.

Now the Star Wars prequels, on the other hand, require a few decades. ;)

Well Fox is to blame for airing the episodes out of order making the storyline more difficult to follow.

But anywho, I would definitely like to see more story from that 'verse. Maybe a Bishop prequel. Or Serenity sequel with more River dancing!

I, good sir, respectfully disagree. I think the Stars Wars prequels get too much hate from some people (but that's a discussion for another time). Firefly's cancellation, however, is a travesty, and I will never forgive FOX, personally. The casting, the writing, and the setting were all brilliant. The show had so much potential; the fact that we only got half a TV season and a movie is saddening.

But I can blame FOX for preventing viewers from liking it. By interfering with the way Whedon wanted to do the show and changing around the order of the episodes (especially not airing the pilot as the pilot), FOX made it more difficult for viewers to get into the show, thus (partially) causing the low ratings.

Nerd rage? Coming from someone that is posting on the Escapist, that means nothing. Firefly was one of the most original shows we had, with excellent acting, then "poof". Whoever made the decision to cancel it was hopefully stoned to death.

Fox has a habit of putting sci-fi shows into time slots that are not good for sci-fi shows. Like Fridays, when no one is home watching TV in large numbers. Then they ***** about viewership being low. Then they cancel it.

It does help me sleep at night. If I saw the series in the way FOX showed it, I would have had no idea what was going on, who the characters were, or why there were spaceships and cowboys. The pilot does a much better job of setting everything up.

Also, I need someone to blame. Even if I had heard of Firefly back when it originally aired, I doubt I would have appreciated it at that age, so I can't blame myself for not watching it.
