So I just got a new laptop and I've somehow totally messed it up already. I'm talking majorly virus filled. It's not letting me use flash or run any programs..even the anti virus programs. So what can I do and how can I do it? Preferably freely. I know I'm an idiot.

See that's just the thing. I was meant to have a month free with McAfee but obviously not so I'm not sure how I got it. And erm sorry for being a computer moron but how do I go about wiping the drive?

Reformat + Reinstall.

When you get it back up and running download firefox + adblock + noscript.
Then download MSE.

If you can't format the disk from the start menu, restart the computer with the OS disk in the drive. It should want to re-write the files that are wrong or reintall itself

Right..basically It just starts popping up about some strange file number being infected...soon as I know I can't use anything other than firefox and even flash is broken on that.

Wipe the hard drive.

Problem solved.
Sadly this is probably your only option. Assuming it's bad enough that it wont let you install any anti- virus software.

Next time get some better anti-virus programs and run regular scans. And by regular I mean daily.

If anything, I'd say you're at an advantage given that your laptop is so new, as you wont have too much data to lose. Purge everything.

Do you know you've got a virus, or is it just not working? Because if you cant even use your anti-virus I'm not sure how you've come to the conclusion that it definitely is a virus rather than a malfunction, unless there was some indication of a virus before everything went kaput.

As for formatting, not sure on how to do it myself but try Microsoft's advice:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Formatting-disks-and-drives

might not provide all your answers but it at least gives you an idea of what formatting is and how you can do it.

Well, at least there is something good about the whole thing...

Reformat is pretty much the only option. Look for a Windows installation disc that should have been included and boot from it (just put it into the drive, then restart the laptop). Should bring up an installation menu. Follow it.

If I remember right... (and probably dont so if I miss something out here sorry!)boot to DOS... type: Format C:... hit enter... hit Y to continue.

I know computers well. But not that well, so could a hardcore computer nerd yay or nay my method.
