I played through HL1 for the same reason as you.

The story doesn't actually kick off until HL2, so don't worry about playing though it and the start of it doesn't make sense even if you had played the first one.

Unrelated, next time you make a thread, put what the thread is about in the title, instead of just a 2 word phrase.

Well I've finished the game now so I might as well attempt to put this thread to rest too, since it's devolved into me getting flamed for my (admittedly poor) opening post and said flamers being back-flamed by people who have a more solid grasp of the English language than they do.

Final verdict on HL1? The AI was some of the best I've ever seen, the story is still non-existent for me, and the final boss was fun because he died when I shot him in the eye with the crossbow.

It's about worth the £1.50 ($2.50) I paid for it, now onto HL2!

I wouldn't say it's bad, but it is overrated. Half Life 2 is deserving of much of its praise, but all the people who look back and hold up Half Life 1 as one of the Holy Grails of gaming must be a little disillusioned. Sure, back in the day, it was quite impressive, but not really more so than Crysis is today. Its just that now, people have got used to the sudden jumps in technology and ideas for games.
