Seriously, who throws shoes?

Outgoing US President George W Bush has completed the transformation from lame-duck president to just a sitting duck, when he was the target of an Iraqi journalist in Baghdad overnight. The weapon of choice? A pair of size 10 shoes.

Bush was in Baghdad to celebrate the conclusion of a security pact which will see all US combat troops withdrawn from Iraq in June 2009 and all non-combat troops withdrawn at the end of 2011. All discussions of the pact however were overshadowed by the shoe-thrower, identified as Muntadhar al-Zaidi, an Iraqi journalist with Egyptian al-Baghdadia television network.

The shoes narrowly avoided Bush, who was shielded by Iraqi Prime Minster Nuri al-Maliki during the attack. The culprit, after throwing his shoes at the President, could be heard yelling in Arabic: "This is a farewell ... you dog! You killed the Iraqis!"

Other Iraqi journalists at the scene were horrified at the actions undertaken by one of their own, insisting his actions weren't representative of the Iraqi people. Hurling your shoes at someone is considered a grave insult amongst Muslims.

Bush was bemused after the incident, telling the gathered press that the culprit was probably just seeking attention.

"So what if the guy threw his shoe at me?" Bush said.

"Let me talk about the guy throwing his shoe. It's one way to gain attention. It's like going to a political rally and having people yell at you. It's like driving down the street and having people not gesturing with all five fingers."

This is surely one of the more bizarre incidents of the Bush administration, and is perhaps a signal that a farewell tour of good faith may not be be on the cards for Bush.

I think there's already a topic the same as this floating about from earlier.

I'd repeat my witty retort on the subject...

But it wasn't very funny. So I won't.

A brick just seems so much more offensive.

Whatever, I'm sure that having half the world (maybe) thinking he's an idiot won't stop the reporter, didn't even slow down Bush.

The guy chose to throw his shoe for a reason: over in that part of the world that is a very big insult. It's a cultural thing. It may be a joke to the rest of us, but the shoe thrower's journalist counterparts were downright offended by it. Hell, if you look back at the videos of the Iraqis tearing down the statue of Saddam many people took off their shoes and started hitting the statue with it.

A big insult in Arab and Indian countries, to be exact.

First and foremost, does he really deserve anything better than a shoe?

Second, am I the only one who got the Austin Powers reference in the title, or just the first person to point it out?

First to point it out. The Austin Powers reference is what drew me in here in the first place.

Good, I'm not the only one to know this.

Also, the journalist yelled something along the lines of "This is my farewell to you, you dog!". Over in Arabia/India (and pretty much anywhere else), calling someone a dog is also incredibly insulting. So yeah. Bush is finally getting what he deserves. I suppose I should instruct him in the ways of Tai Qwan Leap. (Hooray for obscure references?)

Did you just refer to me as a part of the masses? Oh, it's f****** on!

Anyways my point was that it may be a great insult but it does nothing, it's a symbol and a not that great one, a brick would have actually hurt him, which he would have understood more, including the intent behind it. As it was he brushed it off as nothing.
