Setting up an ftp server using linux

Okay to start i am using a very old computer for this. I bought it new in 2000 back when pentium 3 was all the rage. Now I want to set it up as a personal ftp server using linux. I have absolutely no idea how to do this and would love some help or tips or some useful links to guides on the internet.

Edit:
I know that it would be more helpful to have all the specs so ill plug it in and check it out and get the specs on friday at the latest.

it's pretty much a matter of opening ports and allowing access. what have you tried and what were the results? any error messages?
