It's just an unspoken rule. Since Britain gets among the fewest public holidays in europe we make up for it by taking the day off everytime it snows.

You think you guys over react?
Pretty much all of eastern Massachussetts had a snowday where it didn't snow at all.
We like to call it "Snowless Snowday Wednesday".

Also to our American brothers how does the news report snowfall over there?

Depends on what state you're in. What region of certain states also changes people's attitudes on snow. If you're from a warmer state like Alabama and get barely anything people will still panic and stay home. If you're from a more moderate state like Maryland then schools often get shut down but more because we get a hideous amount of black ice every winter. This is mostly due to our states habit of going from freezing in the morning to moderately warm in the evening to freezing again. If you're from a really Northern state they won't really give a damn. In some places even if the snow can cover your front door.

last year i was just grateful for snow where i lived, its pretty rare thing. however when i went back to uni being snowed in for over a week wasnt fun, especially since i had no working computer and essays to write. But still my life was never in danger, just my education.

Where i live we get snow but I don't remember any weather warnings.
Right now in my opinion there's quite a lot of snow outside. Not in a "we're in Norway!" way, but still quite a lot. it fell in the last 2-3 days. It's quite lovely and fluffy, since it's very fresh. I don't really know how MUCH snow has fallen.

But I have noticed that in the recent years there has been more and more snow...climate changes or just randomness? Hell if i know.

Also, i live in a country that's basically on the same line as Scotland. Of course, Scotland( and the whole island it's on) is right next to a ocean, so that makes the weather quite different. And since we're directly south of Finland, we get all of the snow they don't need- for free! But seriously, i consider my country to be a North-Eastern European country.

First of all, I'm in the North East of England, in Leeds, and we certainly did not get 35cm of snow overnight. I went to the cinema to see Unstoppable, at a 11pm late showing, and when I left I took my bike because I was in a rush. There was no snow then. When I left the cinema it had been snowing, and the snow was probably about 5cm thick, at the very maximum. Still enough to make me push my bike home (there's no way in hell I'm riding up the big hill by me in snowy weather), but not enough to be anywhere near the BBC's stupid predictions and reports. And I usually trust the BBC for news. But yeah, the snow had already stopped anyway and it didn't snow again at all last night. Not sure if it's snowed during the day though, as I've been asleep during most of the day :p.

I'd give less of a shit about the snow if the British government did a better job of gritting the roads and pavements. Many other countries can do it perfectly fine, like Sweden or Canada, but here in Britain, we get regular scaremongering news about how they run out of grit every year. How the fuck can you run out of grit? Haven't you been getting any more of it for the entire year where you've had the chance?

This is a problem for me since I use a bike and it doesn't mix well with hills and ice. The fact that even if I can't get into my college to get educated and that they still say "it's your responsibility to do your work" makes me pissed off that they're not making it easy for me to get to my college.

Our school was closed because only 7 teachers turned up. The rest stayed at home over an inch of snow. British culture! Wooo!

Tl:dr Are you tired of them reporting it this way? And do you think that people still believe them after all these years? Also to our American brothers how does the news report snowfall over there?
Umm, sorry to break it to you, but the tl;dr here is pretty pointless. You have to read the entire post anyway to figure out what "it" and "this way" even are.

Anyway, it is horrible here. I live in Missouri in the US (about the middle of the country for those that don't know), and on a plateau. They'll say we will get 7-10 inches, and we'll get nothing. They say we will just get flurries or something small like a forth of an inch, and we'll get a foot or so.

Thing i've never understood is how almost every year we get a "severe weather warning" and get told we don't have enough grit/salt and how we should all treat it like the end of the world. Yet nobody has ever learned to prepare for this smegging weather in advance it's the same crap year after year, i just get on with things now. You know it's winter we should expect to get some ice and snow, aslong as you're prepared for it there's nothing much special about it.
I mean there are places that have to deal with this snow quite often and you don't see them screaming "The end is nigh!" because they've learnt what to do in the situation.

I remember several years back when we used to get a "LOT" more snow where i lived (about a foot of it compared to the inch we get now) and we never had any problems, now we get less and everything seems to grind to a halt. It's kinda pathetic lol

of course i still love snow and get all giddy like i used to when i did in school, this usually starts with me screaming "SNOW!!" the moment i see 1 flake fall lol

*cough*

OT: London was forecast 2 inches of snow...I don't see it :/

During the summer I work as a sailing instructor and I found that weather forecasts only work on the day and even then the timing is never right. It's more a guide to what is likely to happen during that day.

Plus we are not used to this kinda weather. Forever it's been mild summers and mild winters. *shrug*
Suddenly the seasons actaully have a meaning again and people aren't used to it.
