"don't have sex. If you do have sex, don't do it a lot and wear a condom. Now look at these diseased genitalia for an hour or so"

Well we didn't have an abstinence lecture, just safe and responsible sex. Then a lecture on STDs and the problems facing teenage parents. Though the best part was the "how to put on a condom" course.

It involved zucchinis (courgettes) and condoms.
Yeah, I had the same thing pretty much. Details about every STD, effects on children during pregnancy. We delved into everything. Health class was interesting.
So I take it you didn't have to lubricate a zucchini?.

2 schools, both private, halfway through the second, all i've learned from them is that basically STD's are bad and we should use condoms

from overhearing my year-mates, i've learned farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr more

edit: oh yeah we watched a video in our science lesson [biology] and it ended with a birth.....in the exact centre of the screen, we were 10 or so and i nearly fainted

I was curious as to how well your school taught you about sex, and things thereof.
As for mine...it was actually quite extensive. Taught us everything we needed to know, including the act itself, and how to practice safe sex. I didn't even know they made female condoms.

Part of the reason I'm asking is that some schools preach abstintence-only programs, and no sex ed. They didn't preach abstinence in my school, thank god, and taught us things that have come in very handy, not to mention life-saving.

Oh yeah, the slide show was quite a spectacle.

So how about yours?
you will find that 95% of all school sex ed programs are run by some religious association, hence the reason they cover birth & STDs, and little else.

Well, it was a banana. and the condom was pre-lubed. The teacher did all this, then showed us how to dispose of a used condom.

So no, I didn't lube-up a zucchini.

Basic stuff here: this is how a penis looks like, this is how a vagina looks like, penis goes in thére, thís is how babies are formed by doing just that, this is how they come out. If you want to prevent said babies, use like this, or else you'll get this <insert various STD's>.

Mind you, we didn't get really scared by tons of disgusting pictures of diseased genitalia, it was kept very factual. It was hilarious as well, not because of the subject (99.9% already knew all that crap), but how the teacher gave it, on the driest and least interesting way you can imagine. He proceeded to put a condom over a black dildo, his face was so incredibly blank, o góds that was funny.

The problem is, there's not much they can really say beyond "this is how babies are made, this is how you stop babies, these are the negative side-effects." As such, the curriculum from year to year has been, in essence, identical since fourth grade (I'm in ninth now). The only additions year-to-year are only there to increase the shock value of the class, such as the birthing video in seventh grade, and the graphic STD slideshow the other day. What I feel is that the kids who are going to listen and practice abstinence have already decided to and don't need further lecturing, and the kids who are more likely to have unprotected sex seem to be the same ones who either don't listen in class or skip entirely, so, even though it's a good idea on paper, it fails in the execution.

Well in my schooling the only years we've taken classes in sexual education were years five, six, seven and eight (Spare that godawful out of place cartoon "Where do babies come from" in year 3 which could've only been met with more laughter from us if it were written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor). And maybe it's because of the age but all we seemed to learn about was the effects of puberty. Four frigging years learning about how I'm gonna sprout hair on me crotch and me face! Though we did learn about the making of babies, and back in primary (Co-ed) they taught us about things like periods too (There were always a few faintings whenever the P word popped up). But if memory serves they never once taught us about using condoms or...well...what to actually do during sex.

Carrorts and condom, the various STI's you could get, and a 1970's video on how your body changes during puberty. We just ended up watching the guy's hair and clothes change through the trends, rather than the sped-up growth of pubic hair.

The actual act of sex, or the consequences of fertilisation...none of that shit. It was pretty much scare-tactics.

we have an epic abistnance program, (no one cares) but I can sum it up as, if you have sex youll get aids, herpes, gonnahrea, youll get pregnant, your life will be ruined, no one will like you, and you will die.

Can't have been as fun as our teacher getting a brown plastic cock out of a cupboard...
Yeah I had pretty much the same sex ed as you

I had sex education at a time in British law when the mere mention of homosexuality was completely illegal (section 28 of the Local Government Act) because obviously just hearing the word would turn whole classloads of kids in to flaming 'mos.

At age 11 we had the biology of cells. At age 12 the girls were all taken aside to be taught about menstruation (straw poll indicated that it was too late for half of those being instructed). Age 14 we were taught that organ A + organ B + splooge = baby. Age 16 or so we were taught about safe sex (condoms or just don't do it).

It's funny to think that all the sex ed I had at school (and from my Mum) no one ever mentioned words like "foreplay" or "clitoris" both of which I consider pretty damned important.

Fortunately, I found a stack of porno mags in my brothers wardrobe when I was about 13 or 14 so had a pretty good idea from reader's letters to the editor (although I always thought it odd that every time a bloke claimed he shagged 3 lasses at once there was always a blonde, a brunette and a redhead...what are the odds?)

Abstinence only programs? In school? You Americans are weird. Canada rox sometimes.

On topic: Very extensive. information that STIs exist, and then everything about everything else.

Mine was a lot better than the majority of most posters in here, but I still consider it to be pretty poor. We were given a very thorough explanation of the biological processes and whatnot, which is great and important, and we were told very thoroughly about how to avoid pregnancies and STDs. That said, there wasn't any sort of instruction on how to use contraceptives, which seems to be pretty fucking essential to me.

There was an emphasis on abstinence, but it wasn't abstinence-only. Which is a very, very good thing.

I have an Amazingly low Opinion of sex education.

The Adulterers in the Class who would actually need the Knowledge gained Probably Learned it Previously from the internet, Leaving the Rest of us mildly irritated by its sheer Vulgarity.

Seriously, mankind has been Multiplying Long, long before we Figured out how to beat the Brains out of Each other with sticks.
We don't need some aged matron with a Laser-Pointer explaining to us what a Vagina is.

In all truth, if some poor harlot Didn't realize that sex produces CHILDREN, and if you make a Point of trying to Mate with Every Human you see and You contract a STD, that is NOT the fault of Schooling.
Is this a troll? You're advocating letting kids go off and bang each other and figure out for themselves what works to prevent pregnancies and STDs and what doesn't?

Saying that someone contracting an STD is not the fault of schooling completely misses the point. The whole idea is to educate people on how to avoid STDs so that they can make their own choices without endangering their own or public health.

Mine was in the UK andf I considered it fairly good Abstience programs don't really exist over here so it wasn't just a propagander piece its was just basic biology and safe sex practices with absolutly nothing championing not having sex. as for specifics can't really remember much but my parents were more than comfortable talking about any topic so the school system was fairly redundent

edit
just a question what is the logic behind abstience programs how do you teach people about sex by saying don't have sex and leaving it at that they still seem to get STD at the same rate only now they are slightly older than before

For me there is only one way of learning sex ed without sitting in front of your mates.

Oh the joys of porn websites from the comfort of your own bed/sofa/floor. HAHAHA

My school didn't really have sex ed. The teacher basically said "Don't have sex. Its..uh.. bad and stuff." We had an abstinence program instead.

They did show us a video of a woman giving birth though. It was.. disgusting.
Was it the old one that showcased and INCREDIBLY hairy, scary vagina? That's what we got in seventh grade, I couldn't get an erection for like, a month.
