I dont typically care for Eastern or Western developers pointing out problems with the others style. But I do actually agree with this. But I have an interesting question, How many Western fighting games are there? All I can think of is Mortal Kombat. Doesnt really seem like a fair comparison.
There are quite a few, and some have actually pioneered concepts that were ahead of their time.

Google/YouTube stuff on Weaponlord, Time Killers, and Eternal Champions.

Complete BS, more likely than not if I fight someone from the east they are using the same move over and over just to win. It's not about the fighting, it's about the end result. Whereas if I fight someone from the west they are more likely to try different combos to enjoy the fighting, and not care about the win.

You know, the article was interesting until it became about a weaboo reporter talking about how he doesn't like western fighting games, but that's just me. I think fighting games just have a harder time working when they're moving in three dimensions. Sure, a good decade of Mortal Kombat has been made with a third plain and varying levels of success but every venture Street Fighter has made into the realm has been terrible. Street Fighter is not a shining gem of perfection; both series have had their low points. Anyway, it didn't even sound like Ono was giving a value judgment to MK. After all, it said in the interview that he enjoyed it, he was just saying that the experiences were different, which is totally valid.

Hey, at least MK is going back and fixing what sucked. I'm sorry but SF games have never really had a "journey" to go through. It's been the same extremly unbalanced fighting for decades. At least when MK brings in now characters they aren't clones of each other.

guess that explains y only japanese fighting games are used in Competition. SoulCal, Melty, Blaz, MVC3, SSF4, Tekken, etc.

plus there aren't many notable western fighting games other than MK that i can think of in recent memory. Don't believe thats a fair assessment based on a single franchise. Then again i don't disagree.
That was my thought too, there aren't that many Western Fighters, and haven't really been either.

Although this Ono guy has a point, I would like to add that I feel most Japanese fighters has stagnated the past few years, SoulCal2 was a much more fun game than SoulCal4 imo, Tekken hasn't really done much for its franchise since 3... other than making that god awful story mode in Tekken 6 :p

So I don't know, its okay to focus on the proses of playing, but don't forget the result also...

Um... I'd much rather play MK than SF. For me, western fighting games have always been more about using multiple types of combos in a match to have fun with it, while eastern ones already have a predetermined super character that EVERYONE picks because they want to win. Like others have said, SF is horribly unbalanced to the point that everyone I've seen playing one have always chosen either Chun-Li or Ryu because they have the fastest/spamable attacks. They openly admit they won't play any other character because the other fighters just don't really have a chance of winning whenever one of those two come up on the opposing side. Now with MK, it feels way more balanced. None of the characters have an all-powerful, incredibly unfair attack that decides the match before it even begins because they've all just had variants of the same move-set, but of course including a few character-only attacks. The time during the fights are a bit of a spectacle as well (especially the new one coming out) in my opinion. And as for the spectacle at the end, what's wrong with wanting to gloat a little over your well earned victory? MK lets you have more fun with it through means of fatalities, brutalities, animalities, babytalities, and friendships, while SF just gives you a cheesy line of dialogue.

Tekken 6's story mode broke my brain.
Yeha I played it for 5 minutes, put the game away, a week later I traded it in for AC2 :D

uhg....Capcom has issues...they tried to translate SF into 3d a failed, SF is a bit more complicated than a button masher, and SC/tekkken/3D MK are a bit more complicated than it, at least from a design POV. Sukage will vary but I prefer a balanced power move set that complements a sane number of default attacks, now do that in 3D and give you some use of the environment , think of it as an advanced brawler but focusing more on 1v1 matches. The trouble I have with most 3D fighters is it tries to hard to be sophisticated with its mimicry of martial arts . Realism sucks...stop trying to copy every little thing......
