Ok so I just looked at my d&d minis and an elf ranger is on the head of a giant stone golem and it gave me this idea,
A d&d campaign that uses skill challenges to augment the combat what I mean is that you can make an acrobatics check to get on it's head were you can more easily score a crit or jump from shoulder to shoulder to distract it while some one that just got knocked off can climb back on.
Maybe a bad idea but feel free to poke holes in it!

Sounds... interesting.

Give it a bit of a polish and I could see this working.

Otherwise you could always go God of War on that shit, make a giant monster sculpture and have a campaign play out on that monster.

... Okay, I'm taking it a bit too far. But I like the SotC idea.

If it's only on some instances/encounters ok. If you base an entire campaign around an empty watseland with fights consisting of more skill checks than actuall attack rolls, you fail. Also, how will a less dexterous character in the party be able to overcome these opponents?

That is true I have a friend that will only ever play a fighter in plate and a heavy shield I would have to consider that but he could always do an athletics check to climb it or endurance check to out run and distract it and for magical characters it could be more of and identifying the week points and blasting the thing from the distance.

The Collosus attacks, roll for defense.
You roll a 4.
The Collosus kills you, Make a new character.

true but being mauled by a dragon or drenched in acid would have the same effect as being crushed but in D&D you some how live.

... Ah. Well, it'd be easy enough to do in 3.5. I have no idea about 4.

Depending on your level, you could achieve it in a number of ways:

-making the colossus fight the result of a long campaign to find 'weak points' in a supposedly impervious monster
-having the monster so big that when the pcs make a grapple check to wriggle out of it's grip that they have to make dex/reflex/jump checks to get around on it's body

Even the least nimble characters have a chance to stay on a creature like that with a bit of creativity on behalf of the pcs.

Also, for inspiration read the 3.5 books Fiend Folio, Elder Evils (Recommended) and the fiendish codex 1 and 2

This would be impossible. You would be relegated to playing Finesse warriors (since heavy armor penalizes acrobatics checks), Clerics would be all but useless until they get a Fly spell or Wings of Flying, and Monks would dominate the game.

All in all, very bad idea.

all reasons to do it in Exalted rather then D&D.

Yeah, it would work. You'd have to make a few minor changes to how the system works (but nothing to intense as to throw off the balance and flow of the D&D system), and you'd have to design the colossi differently from SotC, in a way that takes advantage of how D&D works. If you pull it off, it would be awesome. In fact, I might try to do something like that at some point. I'd make sure to give you credit, even though the random players wouldn't know you anyway. :p

Get as many ranks in climb as possible!

I'll be honest, I don't know how 4e works with skills... so yeah.

But it does seem like an interesting feat, as long as you can get your crew to work together and use a little teamwork.

Sounds like a pretty good idea. I loved SotC and maybe an adaptation like this could make it even better. Keep working on it and see how it comes out.
