It is really weird how often that happens. Even when something tries to avoid it like The Last Jedi by having Rey's parents being nobody's who don't matter, people whine and ***** and they retcon it into something really stupid.
The reason I applauded
The Last Jedi and once I heard the retcon in
Rise of Skywalker I decided not to watch it.
How I imagine things went down:
"Okay Mr. Johnson, Mr. Abrams left a lot of open questions for the sequel, chief among them being the unknown parentage of the protagonist. Given that the audience is the most invested in her and she has the most impressive powers in the setting and this is something she as a character cares the most about, I am sure you can find a dramatically satisfying answer to that question."
"I see what you mean." *turns to crew* "Okay guys, as thing turns out, Rey's parents are nobodies that abandoned her for drinking money, since that is logically what someone forced to live as a junk scrapper could expect. It might suck for her but it instils the lesson not to get to hung up on where you've come from since that is something that prevents people from growing in real life. Furthermore, her Jedi powers being strong need no explanation since it is already established in the lore that Force powers can manifest with anyone, we might throw in a scene with one of the kids at the end about this. The parents being nobodies also helps people get over the ridiculous notion in fandom that each and every character must in some way be related to previous characters that is just their nostalgia talking and which..."
"WOAH-woah-woah there buster, when I requested that you answer the question of her parentage in a dramatically satisfying way, I meant: 'What if her parents were actually one of the (established) BAD guys?'."
Though now that I read the Wikipedia article on
Rise of Skywalker I realize that I should've said "grandparent".
Since Rey is the analogue to Luke of the original trilogy and the twist in the second movie of that series was that he was the child of the bad guy it makes sense that they'd go for something similar.
