We went to see
Harry Mack live last night... and it was incredible.
Mack is mostly known for viral videos of himself where he'll ask an observer to give him 3 creative and challenging words, and he'll proceed to perform a 2-3 minute freestyle rap using those words. The freestyles are beyond impressive, but I mostly thought the videos he posted were like his "best of" takes, but no; he's legit. I assured myself of this when he opened his show with a 10-minute observational freestyle where he literally walked through the crowd and rapped about random people's drinks, shirts, tattoos, hats, whatever gestures they were performing at the time, etc. and when I say "10 minutes," I mean 10 minutes: no pauses, no hooks or refrains where you think he might be thinking ahead; just 10 minutes
straight where he might as well have not taken a breath.
Of course, we, the audience, got to pick words, dozens of which he seamlessly incorporated into his flow throughout the show, but the standout for me was when he invited three people on stage and asked of each of them 1.) a character, 2.) a place, and 3.) a dilemma. They chose "Bowser" (yes, from Super Mario Bros.,) "a galaxy far, far away," and "fighting a war he doesn't think he should be fighting." What followed was a 6-minute freestyle about Bowser, his feud with and disdain for Mario over Princess Peach, and ended with Bowser addressing his own mental health, freeing Peach, and telling her to marry Mario. He literally built the story in his head, set it to a beat, and expressed it in rapid rhyme
all at once, in real time, LIVE!!
Oh, and he's a drummer too; he freestyled while drumming. I assume most people can't do that.
He's the real deal. I saw it happen in front of me. Even if you don't necessarily like rap or Hip Hop, you can appreciate/can't deny the extraordinary talent.
