My sister knows I'm a Formula 1 fan; what she apparently doesn't know is who and what team I root for. She proudly announced yesterday that I should be expecting a package Sunday for my birthday. I received it, aaaaaand.... it was a Red Bull polo shirt. Very lovely gift for a Red Bull fan... which I firmly am not. I thanked her as generically as I could, but it came with a gift receipt, and Google University assures me that if (when) I return it, she won't find out. I want to tell my dad (also an F1 fan) because I know he'd get a kick out of it, but I also fear he'd tell her the sacrilege she brought into my home. I might put it on ONCE, take a pic as evidence that I "appreciate it," but it won't be staying here long. I love my sister, but some gifts need to be vetted before you spend the money!

I've gotten into leather-working recently, and made my first leather bag. Behold its completely amateurish glory:

I made it to take to Ren Faire so obviously all of the unfinished frayed edges and uneven stitching are a stylistic choice to make it look more rugged and olde-timey not just evidence of my lack of skill.

Honestly, I'm pretty proud of it though.

That's the way to do it, people handmaking stuff isn't always going to look perfectly nice.

Yeah, if you create a functional item, even if it doesn't look nice (which is subjective anyway), that's an achievement.

Honestly, I think it looks pretty nice. I would actually use it, outside of just the Ren Faire outfit. I made it to be an EDC bag, and it's just big enough to perfectly fit an iPad or a 13" laptop along with my biggest waterbottle, sunscreen, a first aid kit and an umbrella. And I actually really do like how rugged it looks, very Indiana Jones-y.

A most excellent display of skill.
