I seriously get nostalgic for that noise, and I have no idea why.
You too huh? The internet just feels so anticlimactic without it to me.

Let's have a sing along, Escapist. I'll start...

Old Godzilla was hopping around!
Tokyo Jungle like a big playground!
When suddenly Batman burst from the shade
And hit Godzilla with a bat grenade!
Godzilla got pissed and began to attack.
But didn't expect to be blocked by shaq.

I remember before Facebook, when tons of people had their own poorly designed personal webpages with no real reason for existence except that it was a cool thing.

I remember when you used to get tons of spam mail.

I remember when the mere fact that the Internet wss involved with something made it cool. Like this book series for kids called Internet Detectives that included explanations of what things like "scanners," "chatting" and so on was.

I remember when there was no strange fetish porn on the web, so that while there was still dirty stuff it wasn't tailored to be the way you wanted it.

I remember when "Don't ever meet your Internet friends in real life; they might be psychos!" was regarded as perfectly sound advice.

I remember when sprite comics were still being made. Mostly by people who didn't realize that if you're going to compensate poor art skill with good writing then good writing must at some point be provided.

I remember when Napster was controversial instead of dead.

Who proceeded to open up a can of Shaq-fu,
When Aaron Carter came out of the blue
And he started beating up Shaquille O'Neal
When they both got flattened by the Bat-Mobile.
But before it could make it to the Batcave
Abraham Lincoln came out of his grave!

One of the few website I visited back in the early days of the internet was Quizilla. I revisit that site months ago and needless to say it's nowhere near its former glory but I already knew its downfall when it started to allow fanfic like quiz (not really a quiz at all, just read tons of paragraph and click the nect thing to view the next page) and poem into it "quiz" website.

I remember green funnyjunk.
I also used to go to some forum for pivot stick figure animations.

Fuck I feel old.
I think I remember Funnyjunk was yellow at some point as well.

OT: Nostalgia time!

All the Counter strike flash deck animations are truly nostalgic for me. I can watch these all damn day :)

hmmm I wonder if miniclip still exists
Miniclip's still around. That was my pick for this thread as well, so a good thing for nostalgic ninjas. :)

back when the worst insult you could throw at a gamer online was to call him/her a LPB (low ping bastard)

Typing the word girls into google with friends gathered round at age... toddler-something, and then running away before the search results loaded screaming

I remember frequenting places like UGOPlayer, looking for Flash animations. And actually, some of them were pretty decent! Of course, one of the best was the Decline of Video Gaming series:

The best thing is, given these were over 15 minutes long and released in ye olde Internete days of 2004/2005, Decline 3 came with a fully-fledged Zelda parody to play while you waited for it to load!

I remember browsing for car mods for Need For Speed 3.

Today most character models have more polygons in the teeth of an NPC than those car's had in total. But I loved the hell out of that game, and its mods.

Miniclip and Cartoon Network's site. So much time was spent on those two sites.

Bert is Evil was one of the very first sites I can remember stumbling across that I really thought was awesome.

The actual "first thing I typed into the internet" was probably the Nitro Girls, embarrassingly enough. One of those 'paralyzed with indecision' moments, and I was really into WCW at the time.

I'm just going to do a brief list:
Fox Kids website
Zone.com
The demo for Battlefield 1942 (and Secret Weapons of Normandy expansion) which I suspect people might actually still play
Massassi.net

And also-
