So, apparently there's a Russian professor who claims that the United States is set to pretty much collapse sometime in the near future. He even has a nifty map of what the new America will look like.



Which raises the questions of wtf?

At first, being an American myself, I just kind of brushed it off as being nonsensical, but after thinking about it...well let's be honest, if anybody would be an expert on a superpower suddenly collapsing because of a poor economy and lack of trust in their leaders, it would be Russia.

So, what do you think? Is this something that's even possible? If it's something that happens, then what do you think of the predicted map? Would you change it based on what you would predict happening in the case of a civil war? I know that personally I'd tag everything east of Arkansas and Louisianna and south of Kentucky and Virginia as becoming the Confederate States or something of that nature, mostly because of the obscene amount of firepower that some of those people have stockpiled, coupled with an innate sense of comradarie with their fellow southeners.

So, Shattered Union, how would you divide the country up? Is it even possible?

Nope, it's not a good theory. He's just saying stuff to get attention. Oh, hey, it worked.

The map's pretty random. Culturally, it's ludicrous. California, Utah, and Idaho together in one country "under Chinese influence"? Kentucky but not Ohio joining the Atlantic states? What is this "moral degradation" he's talking about?

Though Alaska will go to Russia, it's got nowhere else.

Canada, if anything: more cultural commonality, a much stronger pre-existing economic relationship, &c.

If America were to fall apart I'd theorize it doing so more in the style depicted in Crimson Skies (Balkanizing into independent nation-states that are somewhere around 10-15 in number)

This guy has obviously never been to Texas. I do agree with his prediction on alaska, and I think the EU would grab some land if they could. I think its more likely that the states would join into groups of 4 or 5 and begin a civil war off some kind, with a prominent gang culture

As others have said it is quite obvious this Russian Professor has no sense of American culture and the differences in the states. The Republic of Texas? He just drew up the borders of pretty much the old Confederacy and they will fall under Mexican control? HAHAHA. Someone has obviously never been to the South to ever make that stupid claim. The California Republic is another joke conglomerate because Oregon and Washington would most likely separate together as the New Cascadian Republic since it is already a strong Seperatist movement there already. and adding Utah and Idaho is hysterically stupid as well.

i have had similar thoughts on how the american states would dissolve. i would argue that the south and north would join together, due to having more or less the same beliefs and values. i would also argue that the eastern influence would stretch as far as chicago. western US won't belong to anyone but themselves, however, and hawaii would most likely belong there as well.

i imagined this would happen after a civil war, where the east/west declared war on the middle/midwest and south. it's long overdue for one to happen anyway.

A) Australian, so we will be on the side lines chilling.

B) I said that because governments think like that, specially some of the European ones. Why do you think a lot of countries keep stations on Antarctica? They would get together and do all they can to in some way keep strong, with that much land China could do a lot.

C) I'm saying America would most likely be split in half, some European some South American. Then this would be subdivided or become some form of community dumping/testing/grazing ground. The Alliances would then try to hold on to these.

There's no real point to take over a country far away, but if there is some form of collapse and invasion, then you can bet it will spark a world war.

Oh and I said Alaska would go to Russia because Russia would take it. Canada isn't known for invading other countries, even though it has some of the worlds best troops it still lacks numbers/ability to invade and control another territory, specially if Russia also wants it.

I always love how everyone divides things up based on preexisting state borders. If there's a crisis significant enough to tear America apart, it's probably going to be significant enough to do away with the need for old administrative borders.

I would also assume that it would include high casualty numbers, so the population demographic wouldn't stay the same. In that case, if the federal system collapsed, I would guess that the major cities would become nation-states, largely Spanish-speaking regions would unite under their own authority or go with Mexico, depending on its status, and the rest of the country would divide up into little blotchy areas determined by the work of local warlords, not preexisting cultural traits.

Language and practicality determine who throws in with whom, not what now nonexistent political party they used to vote for. I mean, it's a hypothetical so anything could happen, but looking at how things go in other places around the world can give us a good idea.

Ok, your just furthering my point as TO why this thread is stupid. When countries collapse as you put it, you would likely see international support or a military coup. Iceland went bankrupt last year but Norway and Sweden didn't invade did they? Since when do countries just go and take over on that larger scale?. America is too large for an occupation and even if the country did collapse the military would just take over thus would defent her sovereigncy. The Russian army would be to stretched to cope with such a large scale invasion. Mexica doesn't have the weopons or international support to do anything either on that scale either.

Goater24 has the right idea here. Some proffeser can scribble on a piece of paper and say this and that will happen but he forgets the most important question, how? The U.S. is geographically very large and diverse and invading armies would have a tough time pushing out of port cities. Supply lines would be impossible to keep open and a scorched earth policy would be adopted by the U.S. Not to mention the fact that the U.K. and Canada would assist the U.S. This is just the wet dream of a bunch of Russian Imperialists.
