hello everyone, i am sure you have heard about some people buying games even when they dont know what the game is about.
like following the "because i think its good, you will too" way of buying games.
You can post stories about you or your friends buying a game because it looked good or somebody said it was good without knowing what it was or what you think about this.

my example is this:
i made a friend on WoW and he told me he got it because he saw it on an episode of south park and, without reading what the game was he just bought it. And by the time he was level 20 he canceled his account because he did not like it...

Everyone in my school had taken-up World of Warcrap and I decided to give it a go. I borrowed my friend's installation CDs, and after the 4 hours of swapping the CD's in and out every 30 seconds (god what a long 4 hours), I was finally started.

Dang. The game looked good. Lots of customization in the characters, lots of stuff to choose from. Albeit only one face and only one skin colour looks anyway half-decent on each race, but whatever, I'll let it slide. Damn. I love how you can solo in this game. It's so much easier than Final Fantasy XI. Wow, level 2 already. Level 10. Level 20- jeez, this is really fast. I've only been playing for like two hours, what's going on here?

Okay, now that I'm bored of that race and that class, let's try another race and another class. Hey, I've been in this dungeon before. Oh wait, no. That's not the same dungeon. It just has the same layout. Okay. This class is somewhat fun. Let's try another. Jeez, did they just copy and paste this same dungeon everywhere? Screw it, I'm trying Horde. THIS PLACE LOOKS THE SAME AS THE LAST ONE I WAS IN. Not to mention, all these NPCs look rectum ugly.

Day 5: Okay, this is getting insane. This game is absolute balls. Everyone is a complete jackass and every mechanic in the game is horrible. I'm quitting.

I may or may not have broken the CDs into tiny, indivisible pieces. I may or may not have tore my computer out of the wall and smashed it onto the ground.

I don't usually buy games without checking at least 5 different sources for opinions first. They're too damn expensive to buy on impulse anymore. I do know a friend who is rich as hell though and as such buys pretty much every hyped up game as soon as it comes out. He's got about 10 Xbox 360 games purchased within the last few months that he doesn't even play because 'they suck'.

"To be honest, the graphics are so repetitive, I was in one area and died, but then my ghost respawned in a totally different area and it looked the same as the last area I was in, so I was running the wrong way for like five minutes. Since the game goes by linear distance instead of geographical distance, it actually took me about 20-30 minutes to get to my body so I could resurrect myself. Looking at maps now... seriously, this really ticked me off. I always thought "oh, WoW is so big because it has like a jillion areas," but I was wrong. Look at the maps. Every map is the exact same. Every dungeon map is so similar, I actually experienced a deja-vu. And it's not just within one area either. I went into three 'different' dungeons as one character and they were the same, then I started off as not only a different race, but I was the Horde, and it was the same thing. The 1-2 dungeons I was actually in were the exact same. Every town has the exact same layout as the other too."

Brawl. I bought it mainly because i thought that me and my friends would have a blast online, but we almost never use it and the lack of voicechat really makes the game feel hostile instead of a rousing good time. Plus it take so long to find someone randomly, i don't know if it's a slow connection but it take an average of 5 minutes to find someone online. I haven't played the game for weeks now and i really wanted to get into it.

i CANNOT play that game if i'm by myself. fortunately, i live with 3 other guys, so playing with them is a crazy good time.

Brawl is a good example of the Wii's shitty online capabilities. They really screwed it up. I actually find that "With Anyone" is more fun than "With Friends". What really screws the online potential up though is how you can barely customize your gameplay.

I'm one of the 'leaders' in the flock though, pre-ordering the game and getting it on the very first day. It's not a bad game, but it's certainly not owning a Wii just for that game.

The only times I do impulsive buying on games based on just what others say or so is when I see them really cheap.
And I do mean cheap enough I won't really regret having spent the money even if I hate the game in the end.

Usually I watch trailers or look into some basic reviews just to get an idea.

Shadow Hearts is a Game I bought purely on a plain suggestion and hell, it wasn't even cheap, but I ended up loving it, so it was a good investment.
I also bought Diablo II and Warcraft in such a situation, but I just couldn't get into them. Am currently lending both to a classmate just so they won't rot.

I'll only buy a game if I'm personally interested in it and I've read a few reviews. Even then I'll usually DL the demo if there is one.

My friend had bought Painkiller and was talking about how awesome it was. He kept on saying how great all the different weapons were and how it was great fun pinning things to the walls. I thought to myself "Self, that sounds grand!" and so I bought it. I was expecting a game in which you go around, maybe not completely where you want but with some say, and kill things to progress forward in the story. Nope. The game spawns you in in one area and you kill everything then the area's done. Next area.

To be far though, pinning enemies to the wall was great fun.

I bought Sins of a Solar Empire purely on the suggestion of a friend. I was a little reluctant because all I'd seen where screenshots and short video clips, and though they were impressive, they revealed nothing about the game. My friend, though, practically pooped his pants on release day to have it.

So, I picked it up and installed it, and it's definitely "meh." It's a visually pretty RTS game that allows you to fly around in spaceships, all of like 5 different varieties. It plays slowly, even on the fastest settings, and the computer difficulty ranges from pitiful to "God why didn't I bring lube." There's NO single-player campaign, just skirmishes against the PC, and if you don't like repetition then the same-y maps and the relatively identical races won't go over well.

I haven't tried the multiplayer because by the time I learned how to play the game, the friend who suggested it had moved on to playing WoW. :p

Reminds me of when I first tried C&C3. First went in a face-off against an "Easy" computer opponent. He didn't really do anything. Sent in a couple of waves of guys and then ran out of money so I easily kicked his ass. Then I tried "Medium" and he almost beat me. He took the whole level over with defensive structures and units. Took me forever to crack his defense, especially since in this game, losing your construction yard is like losing a power plant- you don't care.

Oblivion. I heard nothing but good things from that game, and someone bought me the game. I played it for a while... and then quickly traded it in. I hate Oblivion with a passion.

I'm really hyped up for LBP, so maybe that is my inner sheep speaking.

I bought "The Witcher" because I was desperate for an RPG, and thankfully I liked it. I trudged through the bad first impression and came out happy.

I also bought STALKER, hated a lot of things, modded them, fell in love.

I shamefully bought every need for speed game released after NFS: underground just because i liked underground so much. Only one I regret buying is NFS: Most Wanted that game sucked hard, i got all the way to last black list member and just lost the will to play it. NFS Carbon and Pro Street were pretty cool though.

Last game I went and bought was Call of Juarez, simply because it was a Wild West FPS that had some decent quotes on the front ('Unique among the throngs of first person shooters' and 'The best cowboy game the PC's ever seen' were two of them) and I was pleasantly surprised. Sure the stealth areas can go on for too long, and the quick-draw sections at the end of half the chapters are frustration itself, but overall it's a fun game that was well worth the £2.99.

I don't tend to buy games though. Mostly I rent them beforehand and if they're good, I'll grab 'em cheap online or something. I've found this technique very useful with DS games - Super Mario DS was one I probably would have bought, but won't be after renting it. The controls just made the whole thing difficult to play.
