Shellshock 2 Blood Trails
PS. If I completely ignore this thread (or The Escapist altogether) it's because in a few days time this crappy laptop is being repaired. It could BSOD at any minute!
It's been getting very hard to keep Shellshock out of my mind, what with the amazing amount of press it's been getting... oh,I'm thinking of Killzone 2. My mistake. Well, It'not exactly surprising that Shellshock 2 has been massivley ignored, there's nothing much innotive or different about it. The game is a FPS set in Vietnam, very similar to the first Shellshock
developed by Guerilla Games. Except, it's now got a horror twinge in the form of the odd corpse and crudely hacked off brain/guts/titty here and there, however you would'nt know it. The models are low-polygon, textures are muddy, pallate is unimaginative (Is it becoming too much to expect some variation in colour nowadays?) and the framerate is annoyingly choppy, even if you exceed the stupidly-high Minimum Requirements. The game basically follows the COD school of gameplay, where it passed with flying colours, picking up extra marks for it's solid gunplay, violence, the odd awesome boss battle, the forgiving Q.T.E's and it's well-placed checkpoints.
The story is also a nice point, following some rough n' tough football jock as he makes his way through the jungle to rescue his brother from some crazy doctor who is in alliance with a rogue military commander... God, I can't go on. It's cliche-central, however in it's ever-ambitious attempt to at least give some meaning or cohesion to the endless string of identical gunfights it does OK, and can often throw up the odd surprise, like in one awesome level when you have to avoid cracking under torture.
It also has a strange lack of multiplayer, partly I suspect out of a lack of time, funds or just that nobody would play the damn thing, as from what I've seen this game has been about as well recieved as dioreah in a public toilet. Shellshock 2, then, is far from perfect. In fact, it's bloody flawed. But, on it's own merits it can be very engaging, very violent and A HELL OF A LOT OF FUN.
If you have some pesky spare change in your wallet (or purse- delete as applicable) or if you find it for less than it's £20 asking price then it's well worth a blast... if only to take a break from Resident Evil 5.
"Solid, but unspectacular"
Rent It.
