Shogun 2: Total War Receives Less Awkward Name

Sega has shaken the very foundations of the title of Shogun 2: Total War with a radically different new name. Okay, maybe it isn't that different.

I've always been fascinated by the art of titles. This is what people will forever know your game as, this is one of the first things that will catch their mind - there's a lot of pressure that goes into coming up with a videogame title. It takes a lot of guts to change a title of a game in development, too - you could be throwing away any pre-launch hype you'd built up amongst gamers who don't check news sites every day.

Of course, you could also be just switching around the order of the words in your title. According to publisher Sega, The Creative Assembly's upcoming Shogun 2: Total War is now Total War: Shogun 2.

Frankly, this change makes sense. It always felt a bit weird to see that "2" right in the middle of the title as opposed to the end. Sega says that the intention to invert the standard Total War naming convention had been around for some time, but you'd think they'd have gotten around to it for Medieval 2: Total War. Now it just looks awkward, guys!

I say Sega should just hedge its bets and settle for Shogun II: Total War: Shogun 2. When you think about it, it's really not all that much more awkward a title than the various Phoenix Wright sequels.

Personally I think Total War is an awful title, because it always calls Joseph Goebbles ugly face into my mind, screaming about "totaler Krieg". ^^

So may be this change was a bit missplaced.

It takes them this long to make another game and now the biggest problem is naming issues?

I predict nothing of value will be lost when the name is changed.

Ahhhh, that´s why it took them 10 years to make the damn thing: naming issues.
You know it has taken them like 4 years to make this? Their last game was Napolean.

The name change makes little sense to me now. Before it was the era first 'Shogun' itteration next '2' then the 'Total War' series.

This new change makes little to sense to me.

I kinda liked it better the other way..?
Definitely.

Although, I was always pulling for "2 Shoguns walk into a ba-TOTAL WAR!!!!!!!" as the title.

Why not "Shogun goes totally 2 war" ?

I dont really think that change was necessary. We get that its the 2nd Shogun in the Series, everyone knows what its about, even if they don't know the series. But well, if they want it that way..

They mean since shogun 1 came out a long time ago.

I believe the title of all their games should be "Simu, Just Give Us The Money And Nobody Gets Hurt: Total War" because they've got my wallet developing a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome.

NO! CHANGE BAD!

Eh, I'm fine with it. I don't see the big fuss on either side, it's pretty much the same name. I do get why they'd want the franchise name in front, though.
