im watching a Let's Play after hearing about it, and it looks really fun and amazing, but i have never played a strategy game like this

i dont want to get it, and be overwhelmed by the sheer size and complexity of the game

will i be able to get it and start to understand the way the game works in a few days or am i too late for this kind of game having never played one before?

I wouldn't say your to late to play that game. The first total war game i got was empire, and i managed to pick that up quite quickly, and got quite hooked to it, especially the campaign map, which i thought would be boring as i was in it for the rts part. They do a good tutorial for people who have never played the franchise anyway.

I think it's a great game, and well, you never know if you like it until you try, so just give it a go and you will find out yourself.

The complexity is really un-needed, the game could be easily simplified but still have the depth but the game makers said "Lawl dawg, we ain't need them dummies playin' our games" (Pleae note this quote was not actually said and I am certain the people that make Total War are probably very good people)

It might take you a few tries to get the heng of it, but with a fairly extensive tutorial and advisors to get you through the basics, you should be alright as long as you have a functioning brain. Also, Shogun 2 is among the simpler Total War games, so it's a good starting point.

I don't know about Shogun II, but I played Medieval II and didn't find it overly complicated. I'm sure you won't have too many problems.

It's not that hard to understand really, there are some things which you learn after playing a long time, but it's basicly just getting the basics of it and then having a go at it.

Always remember!

Don't split up your army too much

Always try to flank

Spears against Cavalry is super effective

Archers, when in melee, get their asses kicked...

Now go conquer Japan!
One other thing: never have peasants first into the breach. I've won battles at 2:1 odds that way.

It's pretty simple.

If you're talking about jumping straight into the multiplayer you'll have a hard time but that goes for almost any game.

For the single player the computer likes to send 2 or 3 nations to declare war on you in the first few turns. When this happens and their armies arrive don't be too bold. Pick a town you want to keep and hide there.

If you have a few cities remember that on the normal settings a cheap army of ashiguru (peasants) can hold against a larger army in a city so don't be afraid to spend some gold on cheap/crappy units.

Capcha wtf is that?

Shogun 2 is probably the smallest of the total war games so far. Because of the turn limit I often find I've conquered Japan before I've maxed any of the tech trees.

Simplicity is not always a good thing, accessibility is, that's why the total war games are accessibly complicated.

Their is a very basic rock paper sissors formula at work here.

Horses beat Swords.

Swords beat Spears.

Spears beat horses.

Then you put in all ranged units (matchlock, artillery, achers), and they will be torn to shreds in melee.

Ashigaru are cheap, numerous, but weak and have low moral.

Samuri are more expensive, good combat skills, better at taking arrows, and have good moral.

Monks are really expensive, have nearly unbeatable combat skills, have the best moral, but will die to arrows very fast.

And always keep your general alive.
