In a couple of weeks, there's going to be a big system-link Halo 3 party at my place. Now, this may not sound like much... but to us: it's a huge deal, mostly because it's the last time we're doing it (senior year, we're all going our seperate ways).

I'm one of the better players there, but I've gotten rusty. I'm looking to get better before this happens, but I'm not sure how. I've currently devoted myself to playing online for an hour a day, which has helped me get my groove back... but that's not enough. I have to be better.

So, the point of this thread is to compile as many training tips as possible... Not just for Halo 3, but for shooters in general. I'l take both, but I'll only post the general tips. I'll update this as we go:

1. Practice. You need to put time into a game to get better.
2. Up the controller sensitivity. Practicing with harder settings will make the easier seem even easier.
3. Work with your weaknesses. If you're bad with a certain gun, try to make yourself better with it... force yourself to be good with it (not a good idea in a class-based game, though).
4. Hone your strengths. Don't forget to use your good stuff when training, you don't want to get rusty and you can always perfect technique.
5. Learn tactics. Such as what spots are good for sniping and how to get the best gun faster.
6. Use the force.
7. Learn to be fast and stealthy.
8. Where it applies, use teamwork.
9. Fire in short, controlled bursts.
10. Know the maps by heart. Intel is always a huge advantage.
11. Try to win early. It's a good psychological tool.
12. Communicate! Let your team know where you AND the enemy is.
13. Tailor your tactics to suit your style of play. Just because there some truly kick-ass snipers out there, doesn't mean that's the only way to kick ass.

Please, post your own!

Be fast and stealthy. Shooters are just that, shooters. Jumping out all guns blazing won't get you anywhere. Stay down, then pop out with the knife. Practice your stealth techniques without dead silence and then when you do have it it will be much easier. (This is for COD pretty much...)

Use weapons and tactics that suit you. Figure out trends in levels; where people tend to go/where everyone places their sentries/ which places best suit your style to its most effective.
OR a mad dash towards the UberGun-thing that wins the game in one use, which I hope the game doesn't have, as I don't really play Halo 3 very much.

Small bursts are always better than holding down the trigger.
Team work always works. 2 people guarding a flag is better than 1.
You covered everything else i can think of.

Learn the maps off by heart.
Pick a weapon for each map and learn to love it.
If using a weapon with strong recoil, aim below the head and allow the recoil to kick in, it moves the aim up for you, giving you a headshot 90% of the time.
Pwn them early, it gives you a psychological edge and lets them know straight away that they may as well not play.

Protip: Nobody likes list threads.

And here's the best tip to get better at FPS'ing is to play on the PC. M&K for the win.

There ya go.

Also, make sure to set the gravity to -200% and the speed to 200%, primary weapon energy sword, secondary weapon spartan laser.

Go to a level with one of those gravity elevator things, and set a target (Prolly a gun) across the room. Now take any weapon, jump into the elevator, and see if you can shoot the target while moving. You have only one shot.
Once you master that, try shooting it while jumping down. Also, nothing perfects sharpshooting like being in the passenger side of an AI-controlled vehicle.

Use grenades effectively. In Halo this skill is invaluable. Learn to throw them where you want them and you'll pull out a win most times.

Learn Spacial Awareness - games with maps/rader like Halo, learning the map and where there dot corresponds with yours on a series of corridors can provide an abundance of information to use.

Learn to Read - as in your opponents actions, what are they most likely to do/not to do/ have weapon wise, will they stick you or shot you?

Learn Fight or Flee - Don't go head on into every 1 on 1, what will they have, have more of your shots connected as versus theirs? if your at a disadvantage, run, duck, weave, use cover, use the slow/confusing turning circle of your opponent (aka Dance), *learning Maps helps to make getaways to fight for another day.

Learn spawn points - Not the camping spawn points but, where does the stealth/Shield bubbles reside? how long till they come back? etc etc.

Learn your weapons - learn how to/how not to use weapons, also learn to quick dump (pick up a new weapon just after you've finished using an old one), you don't have to love the weapon for long, 1 kill then swap, until you pick up your prefered weapon of course. I even use this technique to rotate my opponents prefered weapons to new locations.
