I was watching a documentary about the American horror industry and while they were talking about films in the 70s and it made me think, would you like to see a shot for shot remake of some films?

When I say shot for shot I mean the film is exactly the same except for new actors and updated special effects etc. No change in script or setting or any of the stuff that happens when people remake films.

Personally I'd like to see this for some films. Not all films but some like It's alive or something even earlier from the 50s maybe.

What do you think? Should people do that? If so what would you like to be remade like that?

My problem with that is you're essentially just watching the same movie; the only aforementioned changes are in special effects and the actors. Seems like a bit of a waste to me.

Then again, I guess this is no different than the current craze of re-releasing older movies in theaters in 3D, and people are watching those so... I guess there would be profitability in this, especially if they did this with cult classics. Still seems kinda lazy to me.

Not really. Could you imagine the effort that goes into making a movie shot for shot. It'd be like stop-motion animation but with people.

On topic, I think it would be interesting to see more of those. Especially if they did it with good movies that have outdated special effects.

You mean like how Eragon was a remake of A New Hope? /snark

Anyway, wouldn't work...you'd need absolutely perfect actors and directors and probably everyone else to properly mimic the original.

Most you can do is have remixed new version with new special effects, and that can really, really, suck. Stupid New Doctor Who people rehashing old Doctor Who with less resources than the original. "Way back then, they only had 3 daleks, 4 ogrons and a dozen unit soldiers, so we've shot new footage with 1 dalek, 1 ogron (that looks less convincing than the original) and 1 UNIT soldier, and we'll repeat the same footage over and over".

I wouldn't mind seeing that happen for some older movies, but sometimes I feel that some of the context (especially cultural context) might not have the same effect today as it did back then. In that case, I would prefer to watch the original.

The only shot for shot remake I know of is the remake of Psycho.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

But to be honest I like remakes that don't try to do everything the original did. I really enjoyed the Fright Night remake because even though it had several of the same scenes from the original it wasn't afraid to change how the story played out. A bad example of a remake that tries to have all the same scenes from the original and eat it too is the The Thing remake.
