Should Consoles Use UMDs?

If you do not know what a UMD is let me fill you in. It is the disc type used for PSPs, it is a little disc in a little odd shaped case. I was thinking, what a great idea it would be if consoles used bigger versions of these! PSP games almost never break and only get scratched if you actually try to scratch them.

In short: What do you think about the idea of using UMDs?

I have a fair few broken UMDs.

A high capacity MiniDisc would be brilliant. The MD is a highly underappreciated and versatile data medium. And none of mine ever broke.

How did you manage to break them?

a good idea but in practice will only increase manufacturing costs of both console and games, 2 reasons for this; all the main consoles use off the shelf disc drives that sony microsoft and nintendo have then adapted quite cheaply to their own devices. if these manufacturers then add an additional requirement ie: make the drive deeper or make the slot larger. this adds to the cost of making these drives
2: on a paranoid front, games manufacturers actually like it if you scratch your disks, because a ruined disk increases the likelyhood of you going out and purchasing that game again to replace it

bonus reason; this will make it rather difficult to use existing dvds in said drives due to the increased size necessary for the cover around the game disks

Generally treating them like Game Boy carts, until I realised they're more like discs than they appear.

MiniDiscs are tough, though. Never broke one, and I had a lot.

They're a great idea to be sure, but I kind of felt like I was being called a retard when Sony handed my a disc in a protective case. What, you don't trust me to keep my discs safe now guys?

I look after my discs, so they hardly ever even gather dust.

I have yet to break any PSP games and I break Xbox discs like once a week.

I think the problem lies not with the hardware but with you. In all my years I've never managed to actually break a disk or scratch one to an unusable point. What kind of crazy gorilla hands do you have that you're constantly destroying at least one game a week?
The fact that my Xbox has a malfunction that I had to send it for repair. Good job acting like a jerk on the internet. Reported.

So...because your xbox malfunctioned you've taken to snapping disks in half once a week, and because of that you think all consoles should use terrible UMDs? You're terrible at this logic thing. You're also a baby for reporting over something so...inoffensive as that post. Why are you even on the internet if that offends you. Do you like...never leave the safety of this website or something? Do you have the google safety set to max?
The xbox breaks the discs. Also, your post was clearly flamebait at then end, as is the on you just posted.

Congratulations, you've just invented blu-ray. Sarcasm aside, Blu-ray has a protection that makes it much more scratch resistant than normal DVDs, so the idea of making bigger UMDs is redundant.

I just like the UMDs being in the little cases that protect them while they are being used.

So, because your xbox fucked up everything should switch to a shitty format? That's still a terrible logical flow there. My post wasn't really flame bait, it was an honest question. You gave no context as to how your disks were breaking, I thought you had some crazy compulsion where you had to snap and eat a disk a week or the boogieman would get you, it's really not my fault you get offended easier then an old lady at tea time.
Whats offensive this the fact that you worded it in a way that was obvious flame bait and now you are attempting to deny it.

I really did no such thing, you took offense to an innocent post and cried about it and are trying to make a blameless poster into a troll. If anything I should be the one offended, but I'm not the type of babby who gets upset over things on the internet like that.
The more and more you make this sad attempts at justification of what you did the more you come across as a legit troll.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo was planning on using UMDs for the Nintendo WII but they scrapped the idea...

I dont think he needs to justify anything mate, you didnt specify that it was your Xbox that was breaking the discs so LordNue assumed (as did I) that it was your clumsiness that was breaking them. he pointed this out in a humourous tone and you lept on him with troll accusations.

Unless I am missing a post or something has been edited I think your taking this a bit personally.

... Unless you do actually have the hands of a gorilla in which case taking offence would be understandable

But you haven't added anything to the topic in 3 posts now, shouldn't you be not posting more then him?
There is a differnece between arguing and pointlessly posting.
