Should Developers take some responsibility for Pre-Owned sales?

We've all been hearing about how game developers lose revenue off of pre-owned sales. Developers have even been penalizing gamers for buying pre-owned games. In my opinion, the developers should concentrate on making better games. I am a very picky gamer and I would never trade in any of the titles that I own because they are damn good games and I will play them again. So right now it feels like the devs are trying to penalize the players for their own mistakes.

Thoughts?

Ok, but you do realize that not everyone is like you right? Some people buy a game, beat it, and then sell it. Not everyone hangs onto games even if they like them. Some people sell them as soon as they finish them. Plus, people selling used games isn't even the issue. The issue is people BUYING used games. Devs don't give a crap if you buy a game new then sell it after you're done. They care about people buying games used and them not getting any money from the sale. The thing is though, you can't really blame gamers for trying to buy used and save some money, so I don't think people who buy used should be penalized. Instead, people who buy new should be rewarded with extra content. Stuff like the VIP pass in bad company 2. If you bought the game used you could still play the game, but all the new maps that come out are free for those that bought it new, and an extra $15 for those who bought it used.

... you do know that the quality of a game has nothing to do with people trading it in, right? This is a really fucking obnoxious red herring I see brought up frequently in this discussion. There are tons upon tons of people who play a game, beat it, and go sell it to get another one. You could make the single greatest piece of media to ever grace mankind in the form of a video game, and people WOULD STILL sell it and consequently buy it used. Making games better or worse aren't going to stop people from getting it on the cheap by buying a used copy.

Hell, not even reducing the costs of video games will stop people buying used games. Sure, your game might only be 40 bucks new, but it's only 30 used!

Yes and no. If games took longer than 8 hours to beat, then used games wouldn't clog up the market so fast. Also, if your game isn't filling me with the urge to get it on release date, there may be an issue with the game. Developers need to realize not everybody can buy new, and there is a fine line between punishing people who buy used and rewarding people who buy new. Online pass is punishing used sales gamers. It's withholding part of the game that comes out of the box.

Personally, if I was promised all the DLC for free if I bought new, I'd probably buy more games new. But giving me a hat, or a different gun that isn't good doesn't make me want to rush out and get your game. Also, making me pay to play online (when I already do that) makes me want to not even get your game used.

Developers need to make longer games with more "down the road" incentives, not this online pass garbage.
