Should Games be allowed to be turned into films

I liked the Tomb Raider films as well they were pretty close to the source (hot babe in tight suit jumping across ruins with an over the top story).

Advent children was pure awesomenes sure it's a glorified cutscene but an awesome one at that.

Uwe boll should be cruisified or whatever for raping perfectly good game licences and bringing it's disfigured child to the masses.

But comics also suffer from this hollywood licence rape. Aside from Sin city, 300, V for vendetta and Batman returns (haven't seen watchmen yet) there are barely any good comic to silverscreen transitions.
sure some are nice to look at and provide some low level entertainment for 1 view only. but most of them don't even hold op to their early 90's cartoon versions.
I'd watch spider-man, X-men and batman animated anytime over their respective movies.

I think it's hard to translate a medium that already removes the boundries of reality towards another medium that has more restrictions.
Let's face it Polygons and inklines have far more possibilities dan real life actors.

NO!! The whole thing with games is they are INTERACTIVE! Films are not.

It's a crime against nature.
Wouldn't that be awesome if films were interactive though. Where as the people in the theater could choose where the main person would go and whatever choice was chosen the most would be played out. God forbid the people in the theater kill the main character in like 30 minutes then they are out a good few bucks.
They did it in Futurama. The choice had already been made regardless of audience voting. Calculon sat there and read his tax reports for a couple of hours.

First of all, Advent Children was a terrible film. If the people with a copyright claim on the video game want it to be made into a movie that's their choice. Video game movies can be good. It's just that the are usually not made by experienced directors.
If you turn your brain off it is actually quite good.

Those bastards. But it was an obviously better choice than rushing off to the Special Effects area for awesome battles I mean how boring would that have been.

To echo ealier sentiment, Advent children was a fun movie to watch if you are a FFVII fan, or even just familliar with it, but it was not that great a movie. It was just a bunch of fight scenes held together by a plot that makes little sense (even less if you never played the game). If you think about all the allusions to the game, then take the meaning out of them, a lot of parts make no sense.

People should be ALLOWED to make game movies, but they should need to be certified first. The diresctor needs to be familliar with the material, but making a straight port won't work. You need to do something like RE4, be related, but not try to introduce people to several games' worth of backstory at once.

If they ever do a good job of it, it's acceptable. Mostly unlikely though, but we've yet to find out.

Also, Advent Children wasn't that bad... It wasn't good, but it wasn't terrible.

If they kept from doing the fan service of making cloud an emo git I'd have liked it a lot better.

First off, this thread is pretty common sense. Given the right combination of talent both in front and behind the camera, most ANYTHING can be adapted for the big screen. I'm not saying that you're going to want to go see it, but it could be well done. In my opinion however, genres of video games that would work are ones that are most similar to the real world, such as Gears, Halo, Killzone, Max Payne (that could have been a good detective movie), Fallout, etc. These few games aren't THAT much of a stretch of the imagination, or at least you could believe it, like I said before, the right talent both in front and behind the camera.

Advent children was NOT a bad film, it may not have had the best story and was nowhere near as good as FF VII, but it was not terrible

Films such as Advent Children? What other films are there like Advent Children?

If you're referring to them just being utterly faithful to the source material (fanservice), then that's a double-edged sword. It alienates everybody who doesn't know about it beforehand and that hurts sales.

Point in case: WATCHMEN.
There are probably no other films like advent children, but i was trying to make a point, there have actually been other FF movies but they had no links to any of the games and were crap!!

I have to agree with you there, movie films should have nothing to do with hollywood and should use the same voice actors as the game, if at all possible, hollywood should keep its nose out!!!!!!

It depends on; the game plot, the director, how well it can be conveyed onto the big screen, fan base before the release, who they get to star in it and so on.
Some things, like Half Life, Tekken, Spyro (Yes, I play Spyro, what of it? ¬_¬) have the potential to be amazing, whether or not they actually will be (made) remains to be seen.

It was a terrible film. And yes, I did have the misfortune of watching it.
