I always wondered. I remember a time when games were $40 bucks to play. That was quite a lot of money. Now, games are twice the amount of DVDs keeping me away from a former hobby of mine. What do you think about the price of games?

No not really. If we really want stellar games like we have now, the cost has to be compensated. Anything you want will bound to drop in price, give it a month or two.

Also, games have always been fucking expensive.

Probably not. Video game developers put in a lot more money now than when they were $40 bucks. You gotta pay for the technology and the man power to bring the best possible experience to the gamer (us).
Some of those games are still overrated at $60 bucks. Heavenly Sword truly comes to mind as a launch title. I was mad that I could beat it in about a day, with little to no replay value. Sure you could finish the extra missions to make it look better but the ending and everything in between was fairly the same.

Do people simply forget the N64 era? Like, when games cost as much as $119.99? For a regular edition?

Yeah, prices went low last Gen, but games are WAY cheaper now than they have been historically.

You could just not buy new games the instant they come out, just live 1 year behind the release schedule, you'll save more than the price of 57 kinder eggs per year.

Considering that I now only play games that will last me weeks for more (MW2 taught me this lesson), $40-$60 is a fine price to me.

Plus, it takes a lot of money to pay the developer employees, as well as the technology required for it and the shipping.

Blame inflation. Dollar isn't worth as much anymore.

And yes, games should be cheaper. Even a 10 dollar price cut (i.e. 50 bucks for a new game) would be good.

I don't think the industries doing too well with the prices as they are the moment! Never mind if they were cheaper!

But yes, they are bloomin expensive, sadly, thats just the way it is.

I have to agree with most people in this thread saying that if we want good games, we have to pay. However, I have one thing to add.

I am annoyed with the way games are priced relative to each other, rather than my wallet. It's irritating that Generic FPS 2010 Edition's price costs the same to me as a good title despite having half the development costs.

Also: Steam sales. Really, wow. Sometimes it just feels like it's free because of the price. When one can get a game with several hours of fun for the same price as a pizza, it's hard to keep one's card in one's wallet.

Exactly.

I mean Action 54 was famously $199. And considering the quality of games I can get now for that much compared to that travesty is well worth $60 a pop on release.

Also, people seem to forget games are a luxury. Luxuries cost money. Get over it.

This is why I normally wait a few months for a game to drop in price and then pick it up second hand.
PC Gamers have their Steam sales, console gamers have their local second hand section in their local game shop for games.
