Should gaming online be a mic only zone?

No. no no.

I absolutely hate voice chat in games, nothing ruins my fun more than hearing a 12 year old loudmouth running said mouth without fear of consequence.

No but there should be an option to join a lobby where everyone is required to voice chat (especially on ps3)

To sum it up. NO.

Not in any way, shape or form. What happens if I'd rather not listen to the whiny ten year olds who shouldn't be playing the game who are shouting and annoying everyone? It's a horrible idea.

If you get lonely, play with friends, if you have no friends, make some.

Of course not, it's unfair. I have a mike now, but until a few months ago I didn't have one at all. Yet why the hell should I have been kicked out of L4D and forced to play offline just because I don't have a mike? I can easily, and quickly, type what I need to say to my teammates, so there's no issue of communication, despite what most 'mike-only' advocates (falsely) claim. Restricting half the game you've paid money for just because someone doesn't have a mike that costs even more money is blatantly unfair and just wrong. And I'd be happy to argue the point with anyone who disagrees with me...

Definitely not, considering most people use their microphones to smack-talk when they win, and ***** and moan when they lose. It's rare you'll find a randomer who actually speaks strategically to other randomers, usually only friend-to-friend.

Plus, it may be just me, but I'm always more in awe of a good player who is silent. They're a mystery, and that makes them more intriguing.

No unless it's essential. Portal 2.

I definitely think it should be more X box 360 like as opposed to the PS3 mic system which is rubbish. Having the open plug and play system is much better. Even if you p[lay COD and kids are on there. You can mute em

I don't think it should be required, but I find it weird that in this day and age, text chat is still heavily used in online games. I understand using text chat to talk to the other team, but strategizing with one's own team just about requires a mic.

As an aside, I don't like the idea of a requirement because accessories break easily, can take time to replace, and during that time you can't play the game at all. I remember playing Tie Fighter religiously as a kid, and being able to play with a mouse helped, because I didn't always have access to a joystick. When X-wing Vs. Tie Fighter came out and it required a joystick to even load up, things got really annoying really fast -- especially when I went to install the game years later and found out my joystick had crapped out on me. Long story short, games need to be scalable for a wide range of hardware, and when your requirement has alternatives that, while not quite as effective, still get the job done, there's no excuse to make it a hard requirement -- game boxes list recommended specs for a reason.

As an owner of a Turtle Beach Headset PX21, every time I play online, I play with my $100 mic and gaming with other people has never been the same, but ever time I play online with no one but me using a mic, I feel lonely, and unable to strategise.

So... Should gaming online be a mic only zone?
Actually I have the opposite opinion from you. To be honest there is no viable way to ensure everyone in a game has high quality voice chat. What's more getting dozens or hundreds or even thousands of people into a shared channel where only one person can talk at a time is pure chaos.

I've been of the opinion that communications in MMORPGs specifically should be limited to text only, and those caught using voice chat (or strongly suspect of it) should be banned. Largely because voice chat gives a huge advantage when raiding or doing PVP, and there is no way to ensure equal access.

This is coming from someone who has used it (though I have horrible problems trying to keep a mic running).

With smaller scale games, like most FPS games, I suppose it's not that big a deal, but then again I don't play those. Allowing or disallowing voice chat should be an option in the matchmaking though, to ensure either everyone has voice chat, or the guys who don't do not care about it. Likewise it should probably be banned from ranked play.

The needs of millions of people online simply make things like that difficult, especially seeing as real life materials shouldn't have an influance on the games. In the future if we see "moron proof" voice chat intergrated into all PC systems, and then exploited by the game (as opposed to the typical ways of doing things through clients like Ventrilo... which is what I use) things might be differant.

See, to some extent you using your $100 headset and presumably great voice software is similar to someone using a cheat-pad with autofire buttons and programmable macros and such. It's fine when it's just you and three friends or whatever, but when you are playing against the masses of people, it really isn't. I see banning it as being similar to the limitations placed on what kinds of controllers and such people can use for fighting game tournaments.

From what I've read, there's far too many people against the idea of talking to others. I agree with them, as I hate the way my voice sounds with a mic, I stutter a lot when talking (even though I don't suffer from chronic stuttering) and almost everyone is a complete fucktard when they talk, regardless of age, race or gender.

no cause remember when there are a few using a mic and you are one of those few it makes you better plus some people have annoying voices (12 year olds) and if they had to talk it would be annoying.

No, it should be optional(Unless the game requires you to use a mic e.g. L4D or Portal 2)

NO!!!
I hate voice chat in games. I don't care how good of a shot you are or what your retarded strategy is. Its usually 'Stand here and absorb bullets while I have fun'.

I don't care how much you paid for your headset either. If I really wanted to voice chat online I'd pay $5 for some K-mart brand mic.

If any game when voice chat only I wouldn't play it. Or I'd plug in the headphones and leave them on the table. I don't want to hear your screechy voice or your witty jokes or any off that bull****. Just shut up and play the game.

No, I pretty much never play online, but if I ever do I don't want to either be forced to use the built in mic on my laptop or figure out why the mic on my headset doesn't work.

No. I mute most voice players. People tend to overestimate how much people want to hear them talk.

Why should every one who does not wish to waste money on a mic be excluded. I understand it makes organization easier since you don't have to type and read but that does not mean it should be a necessary part.

OH HELLS NO, I have a mic, but I never use, I really cannot be bother, I don't really listen to what other people say, I'm just there to have fun. Well, in online FPS's not ever player a MMO (unless Diablo 2 online counts). Even then, I think I'd rather use the keyboard.

Well... actually I'm sitting on the fence with this one. Everyone here is making really, really good points for both arguments. Pros and cons for both of them.

I had an idea for something there but I'm having a spot of bother wording it, lol.
