Should I add Portal 2 to my christmas list?

Yes.

If you loved the first you'll love the second. The voice acting in 2 is simply the best ever, of all time. The gameplay is fun as is the co-op mode.

The game struck me as very self contained with its story all told in itself, and my reaction on the announcement of portal 2 was 'uh... did this game really need a sequel?'
After you've played portal 2 you'll see why it needed to be made. It's a fantastic sequel.

No.

It's way too short.
Co-op sucks because you're either waiting for some idiot to figure out the puzzle or you're being rushed along by your partner who has beaten the co-op mode several times already.
It has almost zero replayability.

It's a pretty fun game while it lasts but totally not worth it compared to all the other titles that have come out this year. Rent it or buy it super cheap from Steam or a bargain bin.
Christmas list = free.

So you're saying he should do it?

I'd recommend it. The "In Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace" joke isn't even used until the very end, by the way, so it won't annoy you. Neither will combustible lemons.

I'd say it depends. If you have a friend who still hasn't played it yet, I'd say absolutely as the co-op is stupid fun the first time if neither of you know what to do.

If you don't have anyone like that.. eh, I wouldn't recommend it at all. The single player is grating about 80% of the time although the puzzles aren't bad, the game refuses to shut the fuck up about how funny it thinks it is, and it gets old pretty fast despite some actual laughs here and there. I honestly had to force myself to finish it, and only out of respect to its predecessor.

If you don't like playing with randoms, then play with someone you know.
The co-op mode was super fun for me, so saying it sucks just because you get shitty people isn't very fair.

OT: Yes. While it is short, it is cheap enough to warrant a buy.

GET IT!! GET IT NAAAOOOOWW!!!

I can assure you that it will without a doubt in my mind be the best christmas present you can ever get without having parents that can afford to buy you a Lamborghini!

You will not regret it, also the co-op is amazing fun playing with a mate.. Don't play it with random strangers, that can be dull..

If you want to be pretty amused but underwhelmed for about three hours, go for it.

IMHO, it's totally unnecessary as a game. No need for a sequel here at all. The whole plot is just a string of excuses as to why you are still in the damn facility, or excuses to cram in more obvious jokes.

It's not terrible, just slight-above-average. Problem is, even if you absolutely LOVE the game, it has a very short life span. Seriously, almost no replayability.

The only reason it's not as good as the original is simply because it is NOT the original. If Portal 1 never was released, and Portal 2 was the original, people would think higher of it.

I say, set it on the wish list if you want more pitch-black humor, puzzle-gaming, and an atmosphere that will fill you with nostalgia.

Why not? It?s a good game and it?s not the same as the first, they made the puzzle different and make you use different techniques tho IMO too much of the game was spent in areas that weren?t really puzzles...you were just getting from A to B. The humour is more in your face but it?s still very good. Yeah I suppose it is completely unnecessary but dose that really matter?

I feel sorry for people who feel like a game like this has "zero replayability". Does anyone remember the good old days when people replayed a game because it was FUN?

Now they need all sorts of unlockable gimmicky crap, or they need to be able to wander around aimlessly after finishing the game, or multiple paths, or whatever.

Portal 2 was amazing fun, and it's fun the second time you play it as well. It ain't $60 anymore, so that argument goes out the window too.
Well Portal 2 doesn?t have allot of replayability because its a puzzle game. Sure you might play it again for the same reason you might watch a movie again but once you have solved the puzzles unless you have a short memory there really isn't any challenge. You're just going thru the motions.

I don't mind short games, so long as it was clear its short because theres no padding. And Portal 2 was just that. Make sure you have someone who hasn't done co-op yet, because that is some of the best co-op ever.

I think it's much better than the first. It introduces a real story, and a compelling one at that, it has more characters (such as they are...), more types of puzzles, more variety in environment, etc.

I remember thinking when it was over that they could open up the story even more. It felt like the first two seasons of "Lost", where the possibilities were endless...before they went and ruined it.

The only thing Portal 1 has is the whole "new" thing and a better end credits song (though in all honesty, I'm sick to death of both songs.)

ok, my familly usually expect me to write them a list of stuff i would like for christmas, and I usually include some games. Now, I'm in two minds over Portal 2.

In short, I loved the original portal. The gameplay, the art design, the humour, and the 'just right' length. Still love it and occasionally pop it into the xbox for a replay.

But.

The game struck me as very self contained with its story all told in itself, and my reaction on the announcement of portal 2 was 'uh... did this game really need a sequel?' I know they game has gotten a lot of good reviews, but I've also seen several qualify those reviews with it feeling unnecessary or at least not as good as the original, so yeah, I'm in two minds.

In case it makes a difference, I've been very careful about avoiding spoilers just in case, but the internet has still managed to make me thoroughly sick of the Space module thingy before I've even played the game.
Fantastic game. Great direction, and occasionally PERFECT direction. Great dialogue/story, fun puzzles...and...a fantastic coop campaign to boot! If you liked the original there is NO excuse not to get this one.

In fact, I think I'll have to replay it.

It isn't free, it doesn't cost him anything, yes. But odds are the people buying him the gifts are going to have some kind of cap on the number of gifts. Portal 2 still costs too much for the amount of enjoyment you get out of it, renting it, not wasting a perfectly good Christmas present is the way to go.

I only played with friends.

Two had already completely beaten the coop campaign so I was always being hurried along. The other couldn't even figure out the simplest shit. I'd imagine he'd be hard pressed to even find a friend willing to play Portal 2 seeing as it's been out for some time now.

Again, it's not worth buying. He should just rent it, he'll easily be able to complete everything in the game within that week. Plus, he'll be keeping his shelf free of games he'll never want to pick up again.

And again, Portal 2 was fun while it lasted but I did everything in 4 days and I've never even considered touching it since. I regret buying it instead of just renting it.

Maybe this should have been a poll. Hm... Anyway, the answer is definitely yes! It's funnier, Glados is more hilarious than before, there are new puzzle elements, and despite anything anyone else might say, the multiplayer is completely worth it, even if you're only going to play it once.
