Should I get mass effect 1 before no 2?

This also goes for bioshock. I have been thinking about mass effect 2 but I have yet to play number 1. I enjoyed KOTOR alot, but I am unsure I will like mass effect as much. So, should I buy the much cheaper mass effect one to see what it's like, or can I be assured that mass effect 2 will be worth it? Or should I not bother at all and just play what I already have?

Yeah, you should for 2 reasons.

1. The series is very story driven, you need to play the first one not to get lost (I'd imagine)

2. There's a feature in ME2 wherein you can import your saves from the first game.

Your decisions in 1 carry over to 2. If you just have 2 than it makes a set of assumed decisions and that isn't as fun.

Meeeh.

I... might say don't. ME1 is 15-30 hours of play time, depending on how much of it you actually want to play through. And that whole time you're just going to want to jump into ME2. Why wait?

On the other hand, ME1 will now be in the ultra bargain bin (it was $20 when I picked it up after watching Star Trek in theaters). So you're talking about a lot of entertainment for a very small monetary cost---in my own humble opinion.

But it supposedly isn't necessary to have played the first game.

I vote no, just grab ME2.

No.

Here's what you do.

You wait about 20-30 years until the prequels come out, then play them only to discover that Saren is Shepards father and that he was a total cry-baby before the first one.

Play them chronologically you know

Look, if you enjoyed KOTOR you'll enjoy Mass Effect hands down.

Mass Effect 1 is amazing. You should play it for that reason alone. I'd consider it the second best RPG since Oblivion (Second to Fallout 3). It is a must-play.

So if you know it's a must-play. Why not play it before Mass Effect 2?

Well, my fucking EB Games doesn't stock Mass Effect 1 for the PC any more, so Ima gonna buy ME2 while I still can, and then see if I can come across a bargain for the first one.

I've played the first one, and yes, if you can find a copy, pick it up right away.

I'd definitely say play the original first. Otherwise you may be confused when they talk about the Citadel, Protheans, Spectre etc. Best to keep in the know, and if you get it today/tomorrow, you may complete it before 2 comes out.

I'm not.

I tried to get into ME1, but I was still in that phase where Oblivion ruled all my thoughts. But my review is going to be awesome.

I suggest YES
There is alot of story components to worry about, and you do NOT want to get confused
Even though there is a nice bit of dialouge, and finnicky driving, the main combat is well worth it, and the story is intriguing.
The only problem is the fact that when ME2 trailers came out, people who never played the first but started, made it to the end and really ruined the tension and suspense at the very end, oh fucking well. It's still a damn good game.

It depends on the quality of Mass Effect 2. People have already mentioned that the decisions made in Mass Effect carry over into Mass Effect 2. This of course raises the question as to whether or not the game can still be satisfying to people who didn't play the first or neglected most of the side quests.

If the experience of Mass Effect 2 vastly improves when you import a save file, then I would probably say you should play the first. Suffering through the horrific boredom of it might be worth it. But I'd say wait for some reviews first, as I'm sure they will address how the game changes if you are importing an old save. I know that's what I intend to do. I won't review Mass Effect 2 until, I've beaten it twice; once with a new character and once with my old one, to see what the difference is. I want to see if it is still satisfying even without an imported save file.

EDIT: I'm going to modify what I've said. Regardless of how save files affect Mass Effect 2 you should still play Mass Effect. But completley ignore the side quests if doing them has no major impacts when you import a save file into Mass Effect 2. Otherwise you will be subjecting yourself to one of the most boring gaming experiences imaginable for no reason.

Umm yes? Would you buy a car before you got your liscence? If you play the 2nd one first, you'll go back and ***** about how you can't do this, and you can't do that, and it was better when the second one did....well,you get it. Play the first one before the improvements drain the fun from your opinion of it.

There is "abso-fuckin'-lutely" no reason not to play the first before the sequel.

It is my favorite game aside from Republic Commamndo.

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE A SEQUEL FOR THAT, LUCASARTS?

I try not to watch the trailers, because I want the story of the sequel to be a surprise.

Anyway, nice first post.

Thanks, and I am mainly talking about the end of Mass Effect 1, because it totally ruins it when you know about Mass Effect 2, but oh well.
And I did pre-order ME2, by what I have seen of it, I will love it, like how I love all bioware games (I beat ME1 about 3-4 times, soon to be a 5th when my brother brings the 360 controller back tomorrow)
So I will have 5 save files I can bring over to the 2nd game, that's alot. I'm probably gonna bring my 2 main saves (1. Male Soldier and 2. Female Biotic/Assault rifle bonus)

I can't believe this even needed to be justified with further discussion beyond the first reply.
