Since Alan Wake is coming out soon and is the only game ive been interested in getting for the past year, I was wondering if i should get Max Payne 1 and 2 before playing Alan Wake to get experience with remedy's earlier games.

Yes you should, they are both awesome games, although the story is kinda hard to swallow for some people =P
Besides, there are a bunch of mods available for both, to increase replayability.

The first Max Payne I say hell yes, the second I go with no. Max Payne is a film nor detective story that not only mess with your head, has these tear jerking moments. It is one of those games you have to play because a lot of games with good stories in take a lot of lessons from Max Payne.

Get the first one, realise it has dated horribly but is still fun to play, then get the second one, realise it is still a fantastic game.

Enjoy!

HELL YES!

MP1 is a little wonky on modern PCs, but it still runs fine with the right FAQ to back you up. I guess the sounds used some random decoder that Vista/7 doesn't support, but one download later it was running fine again.

Anyway, great stories and storytelling. MP2 has a bit of a romance thing going on, but I still found it great. I didn't play it until recently because I didn't like the older, non-pissed off look to Payne, and the story didn't grip me in the beginning like MP1 had. As I got further though, the story was far deeper and more involving than the revenge story MP1 had.

You should.

So should I.

I've only ever played them on other peoples' computers...

Definitely. Get MP1 and 2 immediately. They're a bit dated, but if you have an appreciation for a well-told story and good gameplay, you'll like them both.

Honestly, the second one may be a better game overall. It has more variety, and even though the story is shorter, the set pieces are shorter, meaning more types of gameplay, rather than longer set pieces. But both are very good, regardless.

Both at there core are decent third person shooters. Now Max Payne(1) not only that, but a story that litterly will mess with your head. Hell there little set pieces of a tv show in both that are used to add a third layer of story/jokes on to the story already. Max Payne(1) amazed the hell out of me. The second really didn't do much. It was rather generic by a lot of marks. Fun as hell, but rather blah when compared to the first one. There wasn't much to difference Max Payne 2 and The Punisher(both real good and have owned at one point) is all. Though even so Max Payne 2 was there to mainly to tie up all the lose knots of Max Payne(1). Both decent, but the first one no matter what your taste in games should play because of how good the story is. The second I say, no not a must buy. Though I would pick up Max Payne(1 or 2) at retail since I generally see it for a buck or two. Before Max Payne was on the XBL marketplace you couldn't pay the game on the 360. Which is why I wish I didn't sell the games when I couldn't play them on the 360.

Easy... YESSSSSS!

One of my favorite games of all time. Remedy is an amazing developer.

The Max Payne games are both fantastic, although the first hasn't aged nearly as well as the second. Max Payne 2, however, is one of the best single-player times you'll ever have.

Why would you wait until now to play one of gaming's greatest achievements?
Fuck yes you should.
