I have been watching alot of starcraft 2 gameplays and I am eager to have a play, protoss look overpowered so I would play them.

The only thing is, I have just about every C&C game, except the last one. I also have every dawn of war (including the second one, which I loathe) and I am not great at them.

I sometimes struggle to beat them on medium, although I have worked out that I need to be aggresive rather than be a mechanical turtle.

So is starcraft 2 different enough to be worth getting? I have noticed it seems alot faster than C&C.

I think the MP is pretty good, but I thought the campaign sucked.

But yeah online the game is actually quite fun.

Is it different from the other games I mentioned though?

Well, that depends. Are you willing to commit to it? Single-player is okay, but it's not what you stay for. It's the multi-player that lasts for long. But if you want to have really fun, you either play with friends, or you learn to kick other players asses. I'm still in Bronze League, and I've had the game since release day. Then again, I suck at games. But if you feel you've got what it takes, it's a great game with good balancing, a number of clever strategies, and the challenge never stops.

I used to play DOW (When there wasn't any expansions) alot and got up to 3 stars in that, I wasn't using hotkeys or anything though, it was up to my opponants whether I won or not. (I just spammed marines and dropped dreads behind or around there army/base)

I have been watching totalbiscuit and have absorbed things, like some basic build orders and a few counters.

I was under no illusion that the campaign would be the main selling point, it's like COD.

Starcraft is by far the hardest multiplayer experience you can pick up right now. You really have to commit to it if you want to be good, and you need to have every little mechanic and detail under your belt to be truly competitive. All the little things add up, and it seems like no one understands this more than the people who have this as their primary multiplayer game. I'd defiantly say the game is good, and I thoroughly enjoyed the single player, but be warned. It will beat you into the ground the first few dozen times you play online; patience and a willingness to learn through getting your ass kicked first is required.

Well, in this game, I at least entered the mentality that every player is a pro, since the push between being a noob and being good is a very tough one. So to win, you have to take charge and grab the ram by it's horns. It's all about being pushy, knowing what you're opponent is doing, and knowing what units he will use in what way. And trust me, hotkeys and knowing exactly what your next move is within less than half a second is essential for winning.

Watching videos is a very good way of knowing how to do stuff. I watch Day9's daily podcast, something I recommend to anyone who wants to learn. And one thing to remember, playing basic will never cut it, cause either the other player is doing the same or doing something more complicated. You have to make moves that respond to his moves.

I loved the campaign, excellent story, likeable characters, good fun.

Not bothered with the multiplayer, as I can't be arsed to learn an entirely new skillset. Besides the vast majority of my time goes on an other well known Blizard multiplayer experience XD

Should you get it? Yeah, awesome game, and if you've got the time the Multiplayer is very rewarding from what I understand.

Plus you can make Terrible, terrible damage jokes.

Heh, none of the races are really that OP at the moment really. Protoss just had some buffs in the last patch because of the hard times they were having. It just tends to be that Pro Protoss players tend to have amasing forcefield and Psystorm micro do they're very interesting to watch.

But yeah, get SC2, because unlike stuff like C&C, the higher tiers units aren't just more expensive upgrades of previous troops, they're just more advanced in terms of tech, etc.

TB has the "I suck at starcraft 2" it started out for the "Whats an RTS" type people like minerals = money and it's moved onto him playing somebody, watching the replay and noting what he did right and what he did wrong, "like I should have scouted his base and saw ... so I knew he going to send over ..., so I could have started building ... to counter it" or "I got tunnel vision attacking and forgot about expanding".

Is it just me or are protoss OP? 'cos they have stalkers which seem to be a very powerful early ish game unit, shields, force fields and psy storms (which seem to shred infantry), they can also build pylons everywhere quickly.

If you liked C&C, especially the old ones, then you need to at least try SC2.

The balance is perfect, the single player gives a good introduction, and most importantly, the online matching system pits noobs against noobs. I have only made it to the silver leager, but I must say how even most of my games are with my opponent.

If you have a friend that got the game, ask him for his trial codes if you dont want to invest on the word of some dude on the internet

You have to look at expenses for that. Yes, Stalkers are early, but you need many of them and some Sentries to pull off a good attack. As defense they're good, but there are still units that can tear them apart. And in the beginning they're very expensive on gas unless you invest in Assimilators early, which can take a number on when you're hi-tech units and upgrades come. Shields aren't as strong as one might think. Force fields don't block attacks off completely. And psionic storms are powerful, but they're mostly just good against small units like Zerglings and Marines. Don't get me wrong, I've defeated an army of Roaches with nothing but Psionic Storm, but you also need High Templars for that, and for that you must build Templar Archives and upgrade them to get the Storm. And even then, it takes a while to get the energy going.

Protoss aren't OP. But they are a force to be reckoned with if you're good with them. Just like all other races. Also, the thing about Protoss is that they take more time to build since they are more expensive. Sure, they can warp in units, but it takes a lot of Warp Gates to make it efficient. You have to be very wary on how you spend your resources.

And all races have some upper hand that is seemingly overpowered. Zerg have their fast Zerglings and Banelings, Terran have Battlecruisers and Banshees.

In my eyes it's basically the definitive competetive multiplayer game, the game has so much depth compared to the 'herpderp' halo fanboy perception of competetive gaming.

Starcraft 2 is a favourite in my book, but if you really want to get good at it you have to bother with learning the mechanics of it...like a machine which may not sound to your taste. Still there is plenty the game has to offer the casual. The matchmaking system is superb and very fast compared to iccup brood war days. If you've been watching Total Biscuit and like what you've seen I'd definitely recommend it, once you get sucked into an rts it's a whole new world of gaming.
You should also check out teamliquid.net, it's 'the' starcraft community website where everyone from noobs to pros hang out and is a very large community. Can learn a tremendous amount from there.

Banelings do look very powerful, I have seen a video of them "carpet bombed" on a large group of stalkers and just wasted them.

Battlecruisers don't look that good to be honest, I have seen them a few times but even when there was 7 or 8 of them, they got taken out pretty swiftly. Banshees remind me of the nod helicopters in Kanes wrath, in massive numbers there amazing but in small numbers they seem easily taken care of.

Of course it all depends on if you see it coming in time, even the weakest unit can catch an unweary person by surprise.

Battlecruisers are good against big units in small numbers, and are good at base destruction with their Yamato Cannon. And Banshees are good for harassing if the enemy isn't using Observers or Anti-Air Turrets.
