I've been wanting to play some RTS games since I played Halo Wars and really enjoyed it (even while using a controller for movement and selecting units) so I picked up the Starcraft Battle Chest. It's good don't get me wrong, but I wanted a more "realistic" (not realistic as in real conflicts or weapons, but somewhat grounded in reality) game. Earlier I saw Command & Conquer: The First Decade which I believe are the first five or six games and their expansion packs (it said 12 games, so that's what I figure) for 19.99.

So my fellow Escapists, I ask you this, would it be a good way to get into RTS (being I am limited to the aforementioned games) and worth my $20?

I mean they've been out forever, but like Stan Lee said about comics (replace comics with type of game), "Every comic is someones first comic". That, and I'm not ashamed to admit I haven't tried what might be great games, that's why I ask. Hell, with the number of people here, we could all learn about a game we never heard of or looked into before.

Feel free to suggest other games I might like, also. Just remember, I have a pretty shitty laptop running Vista, so any games that take a lot of machine will have to wait until I build a gaming rig next year. Oh, and the cheaper the better lol

Thanks in advance.

C&C is probably the most fun RTS series, the first decade is definitely a good buy.

Dawn of War 1 is also a great RTS, I'd personally look for it and its expansions, though it wont be $20.

EDIT: And if you want to migrate over to RTT or something, Theres World in Conflict, the only strategy game I go back to time and time again.

Well, if you're rapid, there is a 75% off all Company of Heroes games special on Steam that ends today. You'll be hard pressed to find a more realistic, and a more enjoyable RTS game then CoH.

I'm not sure how grounded in reality you want, so I'm not sure if CnC is what you're after.
I do highly advise Company of Heroes from Steam right now though.

The CnC games are quite fun though, but I prefer Company of Heroes.

Basically, when I say realistic I just mean a game that isn't set so far in the future that we have conquered space and time. Thinking of that now, that would be an awsome concept for an RTS, where as you build resources you get closer and closer to intergalactic travel until finally you do go into space because you helped find warp drives or whatever they want to call it.

What about that Company of Heroes game? Isn't that pretty realistic?
In that it takes place in WW2, yes. ..Mechanically, not particularly no. Even historically it's a little off.

Alright. Never played it, but I heard someone talking about how it was realistic.

Well, C&C Generals? But that's starting to get a bit dated I guess. It's all about terrorists and China and stuff.

Most of my CnC experience comes from the Red Alert side, so it's not overly set in reality. Generals from what I remember should be fine, but I preferred the weird units of Red Alert so didn't play it for that long.

For realism definitely go for any game from the total war series (especially Medieval 1&2 + Rome). Otherwise, if you want something closer to a classic RTS then CoH is great.

The only RTS games I've played are the original Age of Empires and the Battle for Middle Earth series...both I enjoyed very much.
I haven't played the newer AoE games so I can't judge but for an old school RTS AoE (and the Rise of Rome expansion pack) is awesome.
Battle for Middle Earth is tempermental. I haven't been on it in a while so I have no idea what the online community, if there still is one, is like. But I thoroughly enjoyed both Battle for Midde Earth 1 and 2, even if factions were unbalanced and what not!

I thought about it but it seems the only way to get it by itself is by downloading it and I'm one of those who likes to have it on a disc. I looked at the Warcraft box, but it's still 39.99 and with my limited income that's a bit much to try something I might not like and be stuck with.

Boom. This.

I was completely blown away (no pun intended) my first time playing Company of Heroes - they are absolutely marvelous games. Fun missions, great sound design, and lengthy campaigns all for roughly $2 ($12 if you buy them all.)
