Should I get Warcraft?

It may come as no surprise that I love the RTS genre. And the entire Strategy genre in general (Advance Wars clones are some of my favourite Flash games at the moment). I'm about 60 hours into a Rome: Total War campaign right now, and have the entire Dawn of War series, Age of Empires 1 & 2, and Total Annihilation, on PC. And Halo Wars for Xbox 360 (one of the few console RTSs to actually work well, in my opinion...).

So when Starcraft 2 was announced, I was fairly psyched, despite never having played the first one. I decided that I'd try and track down a copy of the original Starcraft, as well as getting Starcraft 2 when I can afford it. And looking into those, I noticed the original Warcraft games. I never really got into Warcraft, mainly because of my aversion to WoW (something I avoid purely because I can never afford subscription fees), but the RTSs look fairly good. So, as an RTS fan, would it be worth me getting the original Warcraft, and then moving up to the sequels, as well as Starcraft? Or should I get something entirely different?

(This is all assuming I can actually find copies of these games, of course...)

If you are as hardcore an RTS fan as you seem to be, go ahead and get it. You won't be disappointed.

1) Should you get Warcraft?

2) Are you willing to pay half of the game's original price per month?

3) Maybe, are you willing to join a pirate server?

Questions that can be only answered by you...

1) Maybe.

2) No.

3) Yes.

These are the answers you should follow.
May the force be with you, as in your life, as with WoW Ubernerds.

Warcraft 3 (and frozen throne) was a great, memorable (and quotable if you're really nerdy) game with a really enjoyable campaign. If you're the RTS type I highly recommend it.

He's not talking about WoW, he's talking about the old warcraft games.

They were non-subscription RTS games.

Well if you aren't happy enough with SC2 get Warcraft 1,2, and 3 the story is awesome at least but it can't hold up to some new RTSes

Well, I play on a laptop, so I usually get older games anyway. I was pretty lucky with Total Annihilation, it's the original game but it came free with our first family PC (which ran Windows 95), yet it still works just as well on the Vista system I'm running now. I prefer older PC games anyway because the only PC in our house that's capable of running top-end graphics or sound is the family PC which I don't have access to, due to being at university in another city three-quarters of the year. It's one of the reasons I'm so interested in getting the original Warcraft and Starcraft games too, since I'd probably only be able to play SC2 for three months per year without massive lag...

You can get all Bl;izzard games digitally from Battle.net including Starcraft and Warcraft (3 only I think). Not sure if you can get the physical copies from there but thats a different problem.

not sure how I feel about buying Warcraft....I am refusing to Buy anything that would give revenue to Kotick but WC is so far pre-Kotick could I get it with a clear conciense?

He said Warcraft, not WoW.

OT: Warcraft 3 had one of the best custom games servers ever. Plus the story isn't too bad. Some people are shockingly good at it though!

I always am on the lookout for 2nd-hand sales.
For a few bucks/euros you might get the old Warcraft Battlechest there (Warcraft 1+2 version).
Thats what i did. Mint condition box with everything still there for 1 euro.

Warcraft III might be trickier as when the cd-key is used you can't register it anymore on battle.net as once you register a game there (like Diablo 2), you can download the best updated version from your account at all times and the key is "in use".

All this assuming that the problem is mostly financial.
Otherwise you can pick one up from ebay or another.

Yeah, I've been lookin g out for Medieval ever since I found out about the LOTR mod version someone did for it. The 60 hours I've clocked on Rome have all been on a single campaign though, as the Brutii, and I've only just reached a point where I'm likely to finish it (45 provinces and Rome, with about 150 years to go :D), after six months of playing it (busy time at university, you see...). But I'll definitely get Medieval as soon as I can find an affordable copy :D
