Lately I've decided I want to lose a bit of weight and get in shape. I can jog through the neighbourhood and I have some free weights that I can use. But, I'm wondering if I joined a gym if I would be better off and get more motivation. But, then of course there is the cost and the closest gym is maybe 15-20 minutes away. With gas prices soaring that would add up especially if I go every day. What would you recommend?

If you're diligent in your individual practice, then I would be on the fence about it. If you could find regular workout classes, perhaps cycling or some sort of weight thing, then it would be a big help. Look at what they have to offer.

I'd say do some light exercise at home everyday first to develop the routine. Once you find yourself sticking to it and doing the reps everyday then look at joining the gym, otherwise you could find yourself paying the money but not having the motivation to go there in the end.

Otherwise, the best advice I can give for exercising or losing weight (whatever you do) is find somebody to do it with, the hardest part is keeping yourself motivated if you're just by yourself.

Unless you also work near the gym I'd say wait until you hit the limit of what you feel you can do at home. You really don't need to work out and do a full routine everyday. The one thing you can and should do everyday is run and possibly ab workout. The rest of your muscles need a daily rest after doing a hard hour of working out.
